As an international student, you can experience what Wits has to offer across its faculties, while immersing yourself in a vibrant city and a dynamic society in transition in the Global South.

To study at Wits for one or two semesters as part of your home institution's degree, you must be currently registered in an accredited institution outside South Africa. At the time of coming to Wits, you must have completed at least one year of university study.

Subjects offered

You can choose up to a maximum of four courses per semester from the general academic offering, with the exception of courses in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Depending on your previous studies, you should generally select courses that are in line with your current year of study, i.e. if you are a second-year student at your home university, look for second-year courses at Wits.

Matriculation Exemption

A matriculation exemption is a legal requirement for first-degree study at a South African University. Students with non-South African qualifications must have their school qualifications evaluated by the Matriculation Board that will then issue a certificate of exemption to those who qualify.

Download the form and complete it.

If you are an exchange student, contact your International Office regarding nomination and submission of application documents. If you are an occasional student, send the original application form and all supporting documents to the International Students Office (ISO). View the , the University has with other institutions.

Once received, the ISO will check your application documents.

Complete applications will be forwarded to the relevant Faculty/School for processing.

Should your application be successful, a formal offer letter will be issued.

If you are an exchange student, the offer letter, together with a letter of support from the ISO, will be sent to your home institution. If you are an occasional student, the offer letter, together with a letter of support from the ISO, will be sent directly to you.

1 October for studies beginning in the first semester (February – June) of the following year.

Sign and return Letter of Acceptance from the University to validate acceptance or accept offer on the Student Self Service Portal.

Valid Passport

Apply for Study Visa. (When collecting your Study Visa, check the date of issue and expiry. Ensure that the visa is issued for the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg or any of its variations

Apply for South African Medical Aid Cover with a registered South African Medical Aid Provider until 31 December (Refer to Medical Aid section under "Applying to Wits")

Travel arrangements to South Africa

Please carry a set of clothing in your hand luggage

Arrange for funds for fees and living expenses

Arrange for shuttle transfer to Wits University or place of residence

Undergraduate students should bring their Original School Leaving Certificates and /or Tertiary Qualifications for Matriculation Exemption.
