This Witcher game has arrived on Android smartphones

CD Projekt Red, the video game studio that is currently the second biggest video game company in Europe (the first being Ubisoft) recently confirmed that a new Witcher title is in the loop and work on it will start just after the launch of Cyberpunk 2077. While that news had fans of the franchise elated, some Witcher action has arrived on Android platform too in the form of Gwent: The Witcher Card Game. The card game is now available on Android and can be downloaded from the Play Store. The game has been there on the iOS platform for some time now.


Gwent is a two-player digital collectible card game with both the players playing it in turns. Each round takes three moves to complete. Each deck belongs to a new faction and has at least 25 cards. The factions have “leaders” with special sets of abilities for using against the opponent.

Some of the major factions in the game are Nilfgaard, Northern Realms, Monsters, Skellige, Scoia’tael and Syndicate. Fans of the novels and/or the gaming franchise will immediately recognise the factions. Nilfgaard is the vast swathe of land in The Continent lying towards the south that waged a war against the Northern kingdoms. The Northern Realms comprise of four major kingdoms in the north--Temeria, Redania, Kaedwen and Aedirn--that unite together against Nilfgaard.

Monsters are found aplenty in the world of The Witcher, and Scoai’tael or The Squirrels is the guerilla unit of non-humans, made of chiefly elves and dwarves, that have a habit of attaching squirrel tails to their caps.

The game features hand-drawn art for the cards. There is even a world-level esports series for the card game, called Gwent Masters.

Gwent was first introduced to Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2018 by CD Projekt Red. It was later launched on the iOS platform next year.
