Customs fraud: Here's an important 'warning call' that the government wants you to listen
Scammers keep finding new ways to trap people and steal money from their bank accounts. One of the most common scams these days that has seen many innocent individuals fall for is ‘Customs fraud’. The government’s fact checking department ‘PIB Fact Check’ recently warned internet users against Customs fraud via a post on X. The post also includes a video that shows how scammers fool people. It has a voice clip that explains the modus operandi of criminals targeting users in such scams. The post also includes some key guidelines on what people need to keep in mind to stay protected from such scams.
For those unaware, PIB Fact Check, as the name implies, checks for fake news and misinformation related to the Government of India.
How does Customs fraud work?
In the voice clip shared, scammers call their target posing as an officer from the Indian Customs department. The call starts with the pre-recorded message where it mentions things like there’s something wrong with your parcel that you were sending online. Or, it can also mention about having something illegal into the package.
Then, they ask users to press “9” to get the support and more details on their parcel. Once users press 9, it connects the call to a representative who also pretends to be from the custom department.
Usually, they try to threaten/blackmail users by telling them that there’s something illegal in their package or asking them to pay some amount in the name of tax. And, this is where the scam takes place.
What can you do
First and foremost, confirm whether you or someone from your family has sent any courier. If not, it is best to avoid the call. However, to be more sure, you can verify all communications of Indian Customs with DIN on CBIC's website.
Moreover, it is best to avoid any link you’ve received on your phone from their end, irrespective how authentic they look. Also, avoid sharing any additional personal information with them over the call. They can use that information to further trap you.
Also, don’t forget to report it with the local police or with the Cyber crime department.
