Hickox told Michigan Lottery that she wasn’t even the initial recipient of the lottery ticket. Her cousin purchased the lottery ticket for the white elephant gift exchange for their family Christmas party. Interestingly it was Emily Hickox’s dad who won the ticket, and she won the gift he brought, a flashlight. However, her dad wanted his gift back, so they made an agreement after the game to trade gifts.

Hickox turned 25 on Christmas Day, and it was indeed a lucky day for her. She scratched the ticket on her birthday and won $50,000.

“I scratched the ticket off on Christmas, which also happens to be my birthday, and thought I won $50,000. I downloaded the Michigan Lottery app and created an account to check the ticket on the app scanner. I was expecting to see $50,000, so when I saw the extra zero, I was speechless! I couldn’t comprehend that I’d just won $500,000!” Hickox told Michigan Lottery. The birthday and the Christmas turned out to be her winning day.

Michigan Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli congratulated Hickox for winning. "Winning a prize of $500,000 is a thrill in itself, combined with the excitement of winning on Christmas, and your birthday, from a ticket you received as a gift makes it even more incredible. Congratulations Emily!" Shkreli said in a statement. “We love hearing all of the fun and exciting ways our players find out they’ve won big prizes, and a win like this is what every Lottery player dreams of!”Shkreli added.

Emily Hickox is thrilled to win the whopping $500,000 lottery, and she plans to use her winnings to buy a new car. The young woman is also planning to make investments. The woman also said that she is planning to share her good fortune with cousin, who bought the ticket. She also plans to share her gift with parents.
