This is the only district in India that is split between two states
In India, state boundaries are usually drawn in a way that districts fall entirely within one state to ensure administrative simplicity and uniform governance. However, there is one district that is spread across two states, making it a rare and fascinating case in India’s administrative structure. This district is Chitrakoot, meaning ‘Hill of many Wonders’, divided across the states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
How is the district divided?
Chitrakoot’s uniqueness lies in its geography and administrative structure. Four tehsils of Chitrakoot district—Karvi, Rajapur, Mau, and Manakpur—fall within Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, Chitrakoot Nagar, a significant portion of the district, is located in the Satna district of Madhya Pradesh. This division results in an intriguing situation where residents of the same district are governed by two different state administrations, each with its own set of laws, policies, and way of governance. However, since both the states' Chief Ministers are from Bhartiya Janta Party, administration becomes a little easy, with no friction between two states.
Why is it divided into two states?
Chitrakoot is unique in being part of both Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh due to its location in the northern Vindhya range of mountains, which extends across the borders of these two states. While the majority of Chitrakoot lies in Uttar Pradesh, a portion of it falls within the Satna district of Madhya Pradesh. According to the government website of the district, the Chitrakoot district in Uttar Pradesh was established on September 4, 1998.
Chitrakoot’s connection with the epic tale of Ramayan
Chitrakoot holds immense religious importance in Hinduism as it is believed to be the place where Lord Rama spent eleven and half years of their fourteen years of exile with Sita and Lakshmana according to the Ramayana. As per legends, it is here that all the gods and goddesses gathered to partake in the Shuddhi feast when Lord Rama performed the Shradh ceremony for his father. This ritual, traditionally held on the thirteenth day following a family member's passing, brought a divine presence to the sacred land of Chitrakoot.
