Not just reindeer: 5 animals that make Christmas special

Christmas is filled with bursts of magic, from twinkling lights to cosy firesides and various delicacies that come with the festive season. But woven into its heart are stories and legends that include animals carrying deep significance across places and centuries. These creatures aren’t just found as décor on cards; they also form an important part of songs and legends that have become famous in our winter Christmas stories. Here are five animals closely related to Christmas.

Reindeer

Reindeer, or caribou in North America, thrive in chilly northern lands with their massive antlers, found on the heads of both males and females. These marathon migrants cover up to 3,000 miles yearly in Canada, dodging predators. They have popularly been a part of Santa’s sleigh in legends, with Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, and Rudolph leading the way. Their glowing-nosed hero steals hearts, making reindeer Christmas celebrities.

Donkey

Donkeys trace their roots to Africa’s wild ass, tamed around 5,000 years ago for rugged pack work worldwide. Sturdy and sure-footed, they carry loads through tough terrain even today. Christmas links them forever to Mary riding one to Bethlehem with Joseph, awaiting Jesus’ birth.
4/6

Partridge

Partridges are plump game birds from the pheasant family, living on Old World grounds rather than trees. They famously became part of Christmas lore through The Twelve Days of Christmas carol, where a “partridge in a pear tree” kicks off true love’s gifts. Though charming, this image is unrealistic, as partridges prefer the ground.

Camel

Camels, hump-backed survivors of deserts, come in three types: the one-humped dromedary, the two-humped Bactrian, and the rare wild Bactrian. Domesticated for transport, they share family ties with llamas. Legends say that the Magi, or the Three Wise Men, rode camels to Bethlehem, guided by a star to baby Jesus, bearing gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
