Why are protests happening in LA?

America has not been the easiest place of residence for immigrants. From street arrests to house raids, ICE officials have been cracking down on immigrants from across the globe as a part of Trump's immigration policy where immigrants who are undocumented are to be subjected to criminal charges and to be deported from the United States. Now, the people of LA are protesting against the immigration raids.

June 6 raids

On June 6, coordinated ICE raids were carried out at three locations in Los Angeles, namely Fashion District, Home Depot and clothing warehouse leading to the arrests of around 44-45 arrests of undocumented individuals and an SEIU leader.

Local response

Tired from the constant crackdown, the people of LA gathered to protest against the raids by marching through the streets carrying signs blasting ICE raids and advocating for immigrants, blocking the 101 Freeway on the first day of demonstrations.

Escalation of violence

ICE and LAPD reported to the sites of protests declaring each of the gatherings "an unlawful assembly" and leading to the use of flash-bangs, tear gas, rock throwing, homemade petrol bombs and injuries on both sides.

5/11

Community mobilization

The protests were joined by students from schools in East Los Angeles and South Los Angeles who walked out of their campuses to join the protests. Immigration families formed a major part of the protests holding Mexican flags and banners saying “Nobody is illegal” and “Love Thy Neighbor, not deport them.”

Paramount showdown

In Paramount, where the largest protest happened, protesting crowds confronted federal agents and they used less-lethal ammunition to disperse them.
