Instagram's beloved 'Achamass' grandma Rathnamma dies at 69, fans say, “It feels like we lost someone from our own family”
Some simply end up winning people over by being themselves. That's exactly what happened with Rathnamma, the grandmother who became a familiar face to thousands through the viral Instagram page Achamass.
Now, followers are mourning her loss.
Rathnamma, 69, passed away in Kerala's Kollam district after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. The news was shared by her family through the couple's Instagram account, and within hours, messages of grief started pouring in.
For many people, it felt strangely personal.
One look at the comments and you'll find people saying the same thing: it feels like losing someone from the family.
Rathnamma and her husband Thulaseedharan weren't creating content to chase trends. They weren't dancing to viral songs or staging elaborate pranks. Most of their videos were built around everyday life - casual conversations, little arguments, funny reactions, and those small moments couples share after decades together.
Nothing about it looked scripted.
And that's exactly what made it special.
In a social media feed packed with influencers trying to be perfect, the Achamass couple felt real. They reminded people of their parents, grandparents, neighbours, or that elderly couple everyone knows in their hometown.
Sometimes all it took was a simple exchange between the two of them to make people smile.
Over time, their videos spread far beyond Instagram. Clips regularly found their way into WhatsApp groups and Facebook feeds, where even people who didn't know their names instantly recognised their faces.
Their popularity grew because viewers felt comfortable watching them. There was warmth there. A kind of old-school simplicity that is surprisingly rare online.
The family announced Rathnamma's death through an Instagram Story that read, "With deep sadness, we share that our beloved grandmother passed away yesterday following a sudden cardiac arrest."
The update hit followers especially hard because the couple had already been absent from social media for some time.
According to reports, Thulaseedharan had been dealing with health issues after suffering a stroke and had spent several weeks undergoing treatment. Their reduced activity had left many fans wondering when they would return.
Even during that break, old clips continued circulating online. People kept sharing them, revisiting favourite moments and introducing new viewers to the couple.
Behind the camera, the account was managed by their grandsons, Amal Raj and Akhil Raj, who helped turn ordinary family moments into content that resonated with people across the country.
But the reason people stayed wasn't because of clever editing.
They stayed because Rathnamma and Thulaseedharan felt genuine.
And perhaps that's why this loss is hitting so many people today.
The internet moves fast. Most viral stars are forgotten within weeks. Yet somehow this elderly couple managed to build something much deeper than views and followers.
They became part of people's daily routines.
Now, as fans revisit old videos and leave messages under their posts, one thing is clear: Rathnamma wasn't just another social media personality.
For many followers, she was the grandma who unknowingly brightened their day with a smile, a joke, or a simple conversation.
And that's why so many people are finding it hard to say goodbye.
