Catching the vibe of the ‘grey’ season: 5 animals that are grey in colour

The grey season is officially here, as clouds and hazy air have set the mood. And as this colour takes over, it also reminds us of the cool, shadowy grey animals found in nature.

From fluffy marsupials munching on toxic leaves to deep-diving sea mammals chatting in mysterious frequencies, these creatures pack hidden tricks for survival. Nature’s greys aren’t just camouflage, they are survival superpowers in a colourful world.

Here are five grey animals found across the globe

2/6

Koala

Koalas have silver-grey, woolly fur, perfect for blocking wind, rain, and sun while they relax in Australian eucalyptus trees. Their sharp claws and gripping toes let them hug branches with ease. They shrug off eucalyptus toxins with the help of a gut that neutralises poisons. These laid-back leaf eaters sleep up to 20 hours a day, turning toxins into power food.

3/6

Seals

Seals have grey or brown, blubbery skin designed for cold ocean dives around the world. True seals lack external ear flaps, while fur seals flaunt thick coats similar to their cousins, the sea lions. They store oxygen in their blood and muscles for long hunts and can rest underwater, coming ashore mainly to mate or pup.

4/6

Gray Whale

Gray whales have thick blubber beneath their grey skin, helping them handle deep dives and long migrations. They travel thousands of miles alone or in feeding pods. Extremely vocal, they cut through ocean noise, which is important for communication when other senses fall short.

5/6

Gray Fox

Gray foxes roam from Canada to Colombia, sporting salt-and-pepper fur with rusty accents and black masks. Weighing between 6 and 15 pounds, they resemble red foxes but can climb trees like cats, a rare ability for foxes. Forests are their primary habitats, and deforestation has significantly impacted their populations.

6/6

Gray Wolf

Gray wolves have fur that blends silver, brown, and black shades and are found across the Northern Hemisphere, with more than 30 subspecies weighing between 60 and 145 pounds. They hunt in packs organised by hierarchies, typically led by a breeding pair, though ranks shift fluidly. Wolves also show strong social bonds, caring for one another within their family units. These amazing animals team up to chase big game like deer or elk, using smarts and speed. They howl to chat over long distances, rally the crew, or warn off rivals. Moms and dads raise fluffy pups together, teaching them survival tricks through play. Though they've faced tough times from humans, wolves are tough and keep adapting.
