Colourful wonders of the world

Our planet is adorned with mountains that are not just monoliths of rock but canvases displaying a multitude of colors. These colorful mountains are geological wonders, attracting scientists and tourists alike with their unusual hues. Take a look at the 6 most colourful mountains on this planet.

Zhangye Danxia, China

The Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park in China is a marvel of chromatic geology. The red sandstone and mineral deposits have been laid down over 24 million years and then sculpted by wind and rain. Iron oxide, accumulating over centuries, gives the stones their red color, while layers of sandstone create the stunning array of hues.

Serrania de Hornocal, Argentina

Serrania de Hornocal’s array of fourteen colors emerges from its rich mineral composition. The mountain’s striking appearance stems from sedimentary rocks like marble and limestone, which are abundant in calcium carbonate. This substance interacts with other minerals, leading to the creation of the mountain’s vivid stripes. The process of sediment compaction and cementation into rock, known as diagenesis, has contributed to the distinct layers of colors. Tectonic forces have uplifted these formations, exposing the colorful patterns that originated over 600 million years ago.

Vinicunca, Peru

Peru’s Vinicunca, or Rainbow Mountain, showcases a spectrum of colors due to the oxidation of mineral deposits. Elements like iron sulfide, goethite, and chlorite contribute to the hues of yellow, red, and green. The varying concentrations of these minerals, along with the angle of sunlight, give rise to the mountain’s multicolored facade. Previously concealed beneath ice, the mountain’s colors were exposed following the ice melt caused by climate shifts. Today, it is a celebrated landmark in the Andes, attracting a global audience.

Painted Hills, Oregon, USA

Oregon’s Painted Hills offer a visual chronicle of Earth’s climatic past. Layers of black lignite formed from ancient plant material in swampy locales over 33 million years ago. Grey layers of mudstone, siltstone, and shale were deposited by ancient rivers. The red layers of laterite soil, rich in iron and aluminum, developed in warm, humid tropical conditions. These soils change visibly with moisture levels, adding to the hills’ dramatic appearance.

Seven Coloured Earths, Mauritius

Mauritius’ Seven Coloured Earths are the result of volcanic activity, where rocks cooled at varying temperatures. The presence of iron and aluminum oxides imparts red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow hues to the sands. These contrasting colors create a striking rainbow effect across the dunes.

Cerro de los Siete Colores, Argentina

Cerro de los Siete Colores is celebrated for its mineral-rich composition. Dating back over 600 million years, the hill’s sediments include clay, limestone, feldspar, copper oxide, and lead, which contribute to its pink, white, brown, green, and purple layers. The hill’s colorful display is particularly captivating at the beginning and end of the day.
