5 of the world’s smelliest flowers

When we think of flowers, we imagine fresh, pleasant fragrances. Roses, jasmine, lilies, all things nice. But nature, as always, likes to surprise us.

Believe it or not, some flowers smell terrible. So bad that people compare them to rotting meat, dead animals, or even garbage. And yet, these flowers are famous, studied, and even admired.

Here’s a look at five of the smelliest flowers in the world and why they smell the way they do.

Corpse Flower

The Corpse Flower is often called the smelliest flower on Earth, and for good reason. When it blooms, it gives off a smell similar to a dead body.

Native to Indonesia, this massive flower blooms very rarely. When it does, botanical gardens attract huge crowds, not because it smells good, but because it is such a rare event.

The bad smell helps attract insects like flies, which pollinate the flower.

3/6

Rafflesia

The Rafflesia is another giant flower with an equally giant smell. People say it smells like rotting meat.

It has no leaves, no stem, and no roots, just a huge flower that grows on other plants. Like the Corpse Flower, it uses its strong smell to attract flies.

It may look fascinating, but standing close to it is not pleasant at all.

4/6

Dead Horse Arum

The Dead Horse Arum does not try to hide anything. Its smell is exactly what its name suggests, a dead animal.

Found in parts of Europe, this flower looks quite attractive. But once it starts releasing its smell, people usually step back very quickly.

Looks can be deceiving.

Carrion Flower

The Carrion Flower smells like decaying meat mixed with sweat. Not exactly what you would want in your garden.

Interestingly, some people grow it as a houseplant. But when it blooms, the smell can fill the entire room, and not in a good way.

Flies love it. Humans, not so much.

6/6

Skunk Cabbage

The Skunk Cabbage smells like a skunk’s spray, sharp, strong, and hard to ignore.

It grows in cold regions and is special because it produces heat, sometimes even melting snow around it. A clever plant, but definitely not a sweet-smelling one.
