5 most unreal animals on the planet

Nature never ceases to amaze with its wild inventions. Be it a giant of the sea or an outstretched whale that pulls themselves out of the water to catch birds or lizards and deer with flip-out facial features, these animals seem to be straight out of a sci-fi movie.

These animals go far beyond our understanding of what we think is possible, surviving in extreme environments with mysterious traits that make us think twice.

They've evolved over millions of years, adapting in ways that feel almost alien. These animals have tentacles longer than buses, fermented guts that stink like manure, or faces that blush bright red for love. Spotting them in the wild reminds us how little we know about Earth's biodiversity, as many of them still remain hidden and unknown to science.

Deep-sea siphonophore

This creature is longer than a blue whale, the world's longest animal at up to 150 feet. Spotted in 2020 during Schmidt Ocean Institute's deep-sea expedition, this unique creature formed a stunning feeding spiral. Related to the Portuguese man o' war, it trails deadly stinging tentacles like a living wall of doom through the ocean. Not a single organism but a colony of specialized bodies working together, it moves forward with the currents and snaring prey.

3/6

Muntjac deer

Also known as the "barking deer," a tiny, stocky muntjac from Southeast Asia that's invaded British woodlands. These pint-sized jumpers navigate thick brush with ease, but they are special because of their facial glands that inflate and flip inside out like fleshy party balloons. They use these to mark territory with scent, chatting chemically year-round since they breed anytime.

4/6

Hoatzin

The hoatzin, Amazon's stinkbird, reeks from fermenting leaves in its massive crop, just like a cow's stomach but in a bird. Chicks have specialised wing claws for tree-climbing, shedding them as adults. This greasy, punk-rock hairstyle looker stands lazily, digesting tough plants slowly for energy. The manure like smell wards off predators, earning its nickname.

5/6

Uakari

Bald-headed uakari monkeys from the Amazon have scarlet faces that tell all about their health, the brighter, the better for mating. Females swoon over the reddest males, proving beauty's skin-deep here. Short-tailed and chill, these smart primates live peacefully in troops, munching fruit.

6/6

Ghost shark

This baby ghost shark, found off New Zealand in 2022, went viral for its eerie vibe. Not a true shark, chimaeras have cartilage skeletons for deep-sea pressure. Dead eyes, wing-like fins, and a retractable penis-like head appendage make it look eerie. A ghost shark can be identified as it is born with a full belly of egg yolk.
Spotting this baby ghost shark feels like stumbling on a deep-sea Halloween prop. Born with a plump belly full of egg yolk, it wiggles those wing-like fins and hides its weird retractable 'tentacle'
