5 Lizards and Turtles That Can Be Surprisingly Dangerous

Lizards and turtles might look calm or even slow, but some species are far from harmless. While most of them live peacefully in the wild, a few have sharp teeth, powerful jaws, or venom that can make encounters risky. Learning about these creatures is important– not just for safety, but also to understand the unique ways they survive and defend themselves in nature.

Gila Monster

The Gila monster, found in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, is one of the few venomous lizards in the world. Its thick body and black-and-pink patterned skin make it easy to recognize. It grows up to 50 cm (20 inches) and is mostly active at night, feeding on small mammals, birds, and eggs. Its bite delivers venom, causing pain and needing medical attention if provoked.

3/6

Snapping Turtles

Snapping turtles, including common and alligator types, are freshwater reptiles with very strong jaws. Found in North, Central, and South America, they can bite painfully if threatened. Alligator snapping turtles can weigh up to 70 kg (155 pounds) and have shells over 28 inches long. They are calm in water but can strike quickly on land, so it’s best to be careful around them.

4/6

Iguanas

Iguanas have remarkable defenses in the wild. Green iguanas can grow over 2 meters long and have sharp, serrated teeth. Their venom is weak, but a bite can still hurt. They may give warning signs like puffing up or lowering their dewlap, but they can attack if they feel threatened.

5/6

Crocodile Monitor

The crocodile monitor, from New Guinea, is one of the longest lizards in the world. It can reach up to 5 meters and weigh around 90 kg. Its dark, speckled skin helps it hide in the forest. Known to be aggressive, it can be dangerous if approached, and handling it is risky because of its size and strength.

6/6

Komodo Dragon

Found in Indonesia, the Komodo dragon is the world’s largest lizard. It has a thick, scaly body, a strong tail, and powerful limbs that give it a raw, ancient look. Its venomous bite and slow but steady movements only add to its resemblance to large land reptiles from millions of years ago.
