5 kings with the longest reigns in history, and how they are shining examples of a lasting legacy

Throughout history, the reigns of kings have changed cultures, societies, and entire civilizations. Some monarchs ascended to the throne in their youth and ruled for decades, being proof and guiding impactful transitions that left long-lasting legacies.

Their long time on the throne allowed them stability and influence, often helping to strengthen national identities, make and guide important reforms, or maintain peace through turbulent times. While many kings ruled for relatively short periods, a select few held power for extraordinary lengths of time.

These monarchs, often ascending as children or young adults, used their lengthy reigns to make profound impacts on their kingdoms and beyond.

Here are 5 rulers with long reigns

2/6

Sobhuza ii – 82 years

King Sobhuza II is the longest reigning monarch in recorded history. Ascending to the throne of Eswatini as an infant in 1899, he ruled for an incredible 82 years until his death in 1982. His reign spanned colonial rule, the struggle for independence, and the modernisation of his country. He was known as a skilled diplomat and a cultural icon who preserved many traditional Swazi customs while embracing necessary political change. His lengthy reign brought identifiable cultural continuity and national identity to Eswatini.

3/6

Louis XIV – 72 years

The French monarch Louis XIV, known as the Sun King, ruled for 72 years starting in 1643. He strengthened the absolute monarchy in France, centralising power and promoting a flourishing of the arts and culture. His reign saw the construction of the grand Palace of Versailles, which became a timeless symbol of royal power and artistic achievement. Louis XIV’s leadership transformed France into a dominant European power. His reign is often seen as the classic example of absolute monarchy and governance for generations.

4/6

Johann II – 70 years

Prince Johann II ruled Liechtenstein from 1858 to 1929, a notable 70 years of modernisation. During his reign, he implemented important legal reforms, improved education, and led economic development. His forward-thinking governance helped shift Liechtenstein from a rural backwater into a more bureaucratically advanced principality. Known as "Johann the Good," he rarely visited his tiny country—only five times total—but poured his fortune into its people. He built schools, hospitals, and churches in villages like Vaduz and Schaan, funded scholarships, and even rebuilt roads after the 1927 Rhine floods devastated homes. A huge art lover, he donated masterpieces to museums across Europe, renovated Vaduz Castle, and supported science and archaeology. Politically shy, he dissolved the army in 1868 after a harmless war stint, secured neutrality by cozying up to Switzerland over Austria-Hungary, and voluntarily paid millions in Austrian taxes. Despite no kids, he passed the throne smoothly to his brother, leaving a legacy of quiet generosity that folks still cherish today.

5/6

Bhumibol Adulyadej – 70 years

King Bhumibol Adulyadej, also known as Rama IX, reigned over Thailand for 70 years until his death in 2016. Deeply revered as a stabilising figure, he guided Thailand through numerous political upheavals and social changes. Bhumibol focused heavily on rural development, agriculture, and fostering national unity. His long reign brought a combination of tradition and modernisation, earning him respect domestically and abroad as a unifying symbol. He personally funded over 4,000 projects that improved farming, irrigation, and crop substitution, helping hill tribes shift from opium to sustainable crops like coffee and strawberries. Often visiting remote villages on foot, he tackled issues like soil erosion with vetiver grass and invented tools like the Chaipattana Aerator for better water use. His hands-on approach, even using his own money when needed, transformed rural lives and earned UN praise. Despite some criticism over politics, his humility and dedication made him a beloved father figure to the nation

k’inich janaab pakal i – 68 years

Pakal the Great became king of the ancient Maya city of Palenque at just 12 years old and ruled for nearly 70 years, from 615 to 683 CE. His reign sparked amazing architectural wonders like the Temple of the Inscriptions, which hides his elaborate tomb and that famous sarcophagus lid showing him in a mysterious pose. He turned Palenque from a quiet spot into a powerhouse of art, building, and power, boosting trade, ceremonies, and even military wins against rivals. Folks loved him for keeping things prosperous and recording all the big events in hieroglyphs, helping us learn about Maya life today. His super-long rule really shows how one leader can shape a whole civilization's golden age.
