5 snake lookalikes that might fool you

Snakes often trigger instant reactions– curiosity for some, fear for others. Their slithering movement and sleek bodies make them one of the most easily recognisable creatures in the wild. But here’s the catch: not everything that looks like a snake is one.

Nature has produced a surprising list of species that resemble snakes, either through evolution or as a clever survival tactic. Some are reptiles, others are amphibians, and one even belongs to the insect world. Their snake-like appearance often helps them stay safe from predators or simply reflects how their bodies have adapted over time.

Here’s a look at five fascinating creatures that could easily be mistaken for snakes, but are something else entirely.

Legless lizards

At first glance, they move and look just like snakes. But if you look closer, you’ll notice the differences– they can blink, they have visible ear openings, and they can regrow their tails. Snakes can’t do any of these things. Even though they strongly resemble snakes, they are very much lizards.

3/6

Owl butterfly chrysalis

When the owl butterfly is in its chrysalis stage, it doesn’t just blend in quietly. Instead, it cleverly disguises itself to look like a snake’s head. The shape and eye-like markings make it appear like a reptile’s snout, keeping birds and other predators away. It’s one of the most fascinating examples of mimicry in nature.

4/6

Slow worm

Despite its name, the slow worm isn’t a worm, and it isn’t a snake either. It’s actually a legless lizard often seen in gardens and grasslands. With its smooth, shiny body, it can easily be mistaken for a snake at first, but it’s completely harmless and usually prefers staying hidden in warm, sheltered spots.

5/6

Caecilians

These are limbless amphibians that most people rarely ever see because they spend their lives underground or in moist soil. Their long, snake-like bodies and movements often confuse people, but they’re actually closer relatives of frogs and salamanders than snakes.

6/6

Western three-toed skink

This skink almost looks like a snake but hasn’t lost its legs entirely. It still has tiny, underdeveloped limbs near the front of its body, though they don’t help much. Its long body and striped pattern often trick people into thinking it’s a snake until they look more closely.
