5 animals that can survive in extremely cold temperatures

Winter is a challenging season for wildlife. The cold temperatures, snow, and scarcity of food create tough living conditions. However, many animals have evolved in extremely unique ways to survive and even live during harsh winters.

They depend on special physical features, behaviours, and survival strategies that help them stay warm and find food. Some animals grow thick fur, others hibernate, and a few can even survive being frozen.

Here are 5 most unique animals that can survive extreme winters

2/6

Polar bears

Polar bears are true symbols of winter survival. Equipped with two thick layers of fur and a substantial blubber layer underneath, they stay insulated against bitter Arctic temperatures that can drop below -40°C.

Their fur also traps air to create extra warmth. Their wide, furry paws act like snowshoes, helping them walk easily on ice and snow. This adaptation allows polar bears to hunt seals on the sea ice and survive through some of the coldest environments on Earth.

3/6

Musk oxen

Musk oxen are built to endure the harsh Arctic tundra winters. They wear a heavy outer coat over a dense undercoat called qiviut, which provides excellent insulation. These large animals often huddle together in groups to share body heat, guarding themselves against freezing winds. Their strong, sharp hooves help them dig through snow to find vegetation, while their thick fur protects them from the extreme cold, helping them survival in temperatures that would be deadly to less adapted creatures.

4/6

Arctic hares

Arctic hares have thick white fur coats that provide warmth and camouflage on snowy terrain. Their fur changes to brownish shades in summer, helping them camouflage into the environment year-round. To escape severe cold, these hares dig into snow banks and create insulated burrows. This shields them from icy winds and predators. Their strong hind legs also help in fast movement across the snow, helping to quickly escape from danger during harsh winter months.

5/6

Snow leopards

Snow leopards live in cold mountainous regions with freezing winters. Their dense fur covers their entire body, including long, fluffy tails that wrap around them for extra warmth. These big cats have powerful legs to leap between rocky ledges and thick padded paws that act like natural snowshoes.

6/6

Snowy owls

Snowy owls are well prepared for frigid Arctic climates. They possess thick, layered feathers that trap warmth and insulate them from the cold. These owls perch and hunt in open areas covered in snow, feeding mainly on small mammals like lemmings. Their white plumage acts as camouflage against the snow, helping them avoid predators and sneak up on prey. With keen eyesight and silent flight, snowy owls efficiently survive and live amid winter’s challenges.
