10 most populated countries in the world

World population, on a whole, has been steadily increasing day by day, as it is influenced by several factors including greater life expectancy, increased fertility rates in some nations, and medical improvements. Although there is a great potential for economic growth and progress due to population increase, there are also significant obstacles, such as the strain on the nation's natural resources to meet the rising demand for housing, healthcare, and education. Despite some nations seeing exponential growth and others facing population decreases or slowdowns, rapid population increase requires careful planning and management. These are the top ten nations in the world by population, as determined by Worldometer.

2/11

India

India is home to over 1.46 billion people, making it the world’s most populous country. With a growth rate of 0.89%, India’s population has surged to be the highest in the world, due to high birth rates, high rates of illiteracy, a young population, and improved healthcare. Apart from this rapidly growing urbanisation is also a contributing factor. Despite slowing growth in some regions, India’s population continues to increase, with significant demands on resources, infrastructure, and social services. The country surpassed China’s population in 2022.

3/11

China

China’s population, at 1.41 billion, is second globally, but it has been seeing a slight decline in growth, at −0.23%. The rapid population growth China experienced in the 20th century was largely driven by a strong agricultural base, improved healthcare, and state policies that laid heavy emphasis on large families. However, the one-child policy that lasted from 1979 to 2015 has slowed growth. Today, China faces an aging population and declining birth rates, which are causing concerns for its long-term labour force.

4/11

United States of America

With a population of over 347 million people, the United States ranks third globally. Its population growth rate of 0.54% is largely fueled by immigration, with the US constantly receiving large numbers of immigrants that seek better opportunities for employment in the country. The relatively high fertility rate, along with technological advancements in healthcare, has also supported population growth. However, challenges such as income inequality, healthcare access, and urban congestion are also rising along with the growing population.

5/11

Indonesia

Indonesia is the fourth most populated country in the world, home to 285.7 million people. A youthful population and better healthcare, which has reduced newborn mortality rates, are the main drivers of the Southeast Asian country's 0.79% growth rate. Indonesia's rapid population increase is partly a result of its high fertility rate and growing urbanization, especially in places like Jakarta. The sustainability of this growth is threatened by issues including poverty, environmental deterioration, and a lack of infrastructure, notwithstanding economic gain.

6/11

Pakistan

Pakistan has a population of 255 million and a growth rate of 1.57%, which is among the highest in the world. Cultural reasons, in which big families are preferred, are the cause of the high rate of growth in the population of the country. Pakistan also has high fertility, though this is now slowly declining. Pakistan, with a high youth population and low resources, struggles to provide education, healthcare, and jobs to its growing population.

7/11

Nigeria

Nigeria's population of 237.5 million is increasing at a rate of 2.08% per year. Being the most populous country in Africa, Nigeria's high growth rate is due to high birth rates, cultural values that are based on large families, and progressing healthcare that have reduced mortality rates. With more than half the population aged below 18 years, Nigeria has the twin challenge of educating an expanding youth population while also dealing with infrastructural shortages, poverty, and political instability.

8/11

Brazil

Brazil has a population of 212.8 million, and it has seen a slower growth rate of 0.38%. Historically, high birth rates were common in Brazil, but since the 1990s, fertility rates have declined, contributing to a slower population increase. Urbanization and increased access to family planning and healthcare services have also played key roles. However, Brazil still faces problems in addressing economic inequality, deforestation, and providing social services to its growing urban areas.

9/11

Bangladesh

Bangladesh has a massive 175.7 million people, with a growth rate of 1.22%. Despite being a small country geographically, Bangladesh’s population density is one of the highest globally. High fertility rates and improvements in healthcare have led to rapid population growth in recent decades. Although the country has made some major efforts in reducing poverty and improving literacy rates, it still faces challenges related to overpopulation, particularly in urban areas like Dhaka, where infrastructure is short.

10/11

Russia

Russia’s population of 144 million has been in decline for years, with a growth rate of −0.57%. The country faces challenges based on the demography, as most of the country remains covered with snow. It also faces low birth rates and a high mortality rate, particularly among working-age men. Factors such as economic instability, emigration, and a poor healthcare system have contributed to a shrinking population. However, Russia’s government has implemented policies to encourage higher birth rates, including financial incentives for families to have children, though the impact has been limited.

11/11

Ethiopia

Ethiopia's population stands at 135.5 million, growing at 2.58% annually, which is one of the highest growth rates in Africa. The rapid population increase is due to a combination of improved healthcare, reduced mortality rates, and a traditionally young population. While the country has made much progress in education and infrastructure, it continues to face challenges like poverty, food security, and climate change, which threaten the sustainability of this growth.
