10 countries where youths are less happy than elders

In recent years, there has been a growing concern about the happiness levels of young people compared to older generations. According to the World Happiness Report 2024, there are several countries where the youth report lower levels of happiness than the elderly. Here are top ten countries where this trend is most prominent and explores the factors contributing to this generational happiness gap.

2/11

Mauritius

Mauritius used to be a happy island. However, lately, the country has seen the youths becoming unhappy. This is partly because of extreme economic pressures alongside rising rates of unemployment that have made a majority of the youths dissatisfied with their lives. Indeed, joblessness surround these young people, thereby frustrating and making them uncertain about their future. In addition, living costs have been rising in this country, causing young people to fight hard to gain financial independence. These economic challenges are thus telling their effects on the welfare and well-being of the younger generation.

3/11

United States

Even though it is considered a strong economy, happiness is shifting across generations in the United States. Student debt and high housing costs further are some causes of lower levels of happiness that young people experience. Most of the young Americans are carrying educational loans which indirectly hampers the development of their route towards financial security. Additionally, high competition in job areas and costs for living which are getting increasingly high, particularly in cities, increase the stress among the youth and widen the gap for happiness.

4/11

Canada

Similar to the United States, Canada is dealing with high housing costs and economic uncertainty, which are affecting the well-being of its young people. The dream of homeownership is becoming increasingly unattainable for many young Canadians, leading to frustration and a sense of insecurity. Furthermore, the job market, while being stiff, is highly competitive, and many young professionals find it challenging to secure stable and well-paying jobs. These economic challenges are significant contributors to the lower happiness levels among the youth in Canada.

5/11

Uzbekistan

Changes in Uzbekistan's economy and society might reduce the happiness of their youth. The transition period poses economic and social challenges that may be discouraging the younger generation. Economic reforms and modernization of Uzbekistan have set forth uncertainty and change the traditional livelihood style of young people. Unstable employment as well as changes in social norms and expectations make difficult the life of youth with a consequent reduction in their happiness and general welfare.

6/11

China

Fast-paced urban growth, tough competition, and societal pressure are likely affecting the mental health of young people in China. The high expectations and competitive environment contribute to lower happiness levels among the youth. Many young Chinese individuals experience immense pressure to succeed academically and professionally, often at the expense of their mental health. The rapid urbanization also leads to a fast-paced lifestyle that can be overwhelming, further exacerbating stress and dissatisfaction among the younger generation.

7/11

Japan

Japan's low birth rate, strict social norms, and economic stagnation seem to be contributing to the unhappiness of young people. The pressure to conform and the lack of economic opportunities are significant factors. Young people in Japan often face societal expectations to follow rigid career paths, and the limited availability of jobs in a stagnant economy adds to their stress. Additionally, the declining birth rate puts pressure on the youth to support an aging population, leading to increased financial and emotional burdens.

8/11

Mongolia

Economic struggles and social issues are having an impact on the happiness of young Mongolians. The younger generation faces challenges in finding stable employment and achieving financial security. Mongolia's economy, heavily reliant on mining and agriculture, has faced fluctuations that impact job availability and stability. Young people in rural areas, in particular, find it difficult to access quality education and employment opportunities, leading to lower happiness levels compared to their elders who have more stable livelihoods.

9/11

Algeria

Political instability, economic hardships, and social unrest are affecting the mental well-being of young people in Algeria. The ongoing crises create a challenging environment for the youth. Young Algerians are often caught in the midst of political turmoil and economic difficulties, with limited opportunities for personal and professional growth. The high unemployment rate and social unrest contribute to a sense of hopelessness and frustration, significantly impacting their overall happiness and mental health.

10/11

Libya

Ongoing political and economic crises in Libya are creating a tough environment for the country's youth. The instability and lack of opportunities contribute to lower happiness levels among young people. The protracted conflict and economic struggles have led to a dire situation where young Libyans face extreme uncertainty about their future. The lack of stability and security, along with limited access to education and employment, severely affects their well-being and prospects for a better life.

11/11

Singapore

Although economically successful, Singapore's high living costs, fierce competition, and demanding work culture might be lowering happiness levels among young people. The pressure to succeed and the high cost of living are significant factors. Young Singaporeans often face intense academic and professional competition, leading to high stress levels. The high cost of living, especially housing, adds to their financial burdens. Despite the economic prosperity of the country, these pressures contribute to lower happiness levels among the youth.
