I make music for you the way a mother makes food for her child: Ilaiyaraaja

Maestro Ilaiyaraaja recently interacted with fans at a popular incubation hub in the city. Jayesh Ranjan, the principal secretary of I&C and IT, Telangana, popular playback singer Sunitha and Anish Anthony, head of the incubation hub, were also present. Several enthusiastic music fans awaited the legendary composer’s arrival and were happy to see him in person.

Responding to a couple of hand-picked questions, Ilaiyaraaja opened up on his approach to music: “All my
songs that you hear have beenheard by me first. Not as a composer but as a music lover. There is no greater critic than me when it comes to my songs. I approach and compose musicfor all of you the way a mother prepares food for her children — with the intention of serving them the best,” he said, adding, “The current generation talks about the use of technology in music all the time. But when it comes to composing, music is a technique, not technology. When music is programmed, it becomes technology. It is not technology that brings life to music but the musician’s technique.”

A short video capturing the maestro’s incredible musical journey directed by filmmaker AL Vijay, featuring the local band, Threeory, was also played on the occasion. The composer looked amused watching it on-screen.
