'Petta' box office collections day 1: Rajinikanth's 'Petta' rakes in Rs 36.6 Cr gross worldwide

’ has raked in more than Rs 36.6 Cr gross worldwide on its opening day, giving it a decent start.

and Nawazuddin Siddiqui charts the story of a man named Kaali, who’s a hostel warden with a past. Upon its release, the film received good response from critics and fans alike, with many hailing the film as the return of the old mass Rajini. Director Karthik took to social media to thank the audience for the love and wrote, “#Petta response is so overwhelming and awesome...Thank you Thalaivar fans...Love you Thalaivaaaaaa...Thank you @sunpictures & whole TEAM!! The film is also doing well overseas more than it is in India. The film even crossed the $1 Million mark in the US in two days, something that trade analyst Ramesh Bala shared on his social media, “At the end of Premieres + Day 2, #SuperstarRajinikanth 's #Petta crosses $1 Million at the #USA Box office..$1,089,910 [₹7.67 Cr]” (sic) The film didn’t just cross the $1M mark, it is even racing towards the $2M one.

The film faced competition from Ajith’s ‘Vishwam’ in Tamil Nadu, but has reportedly held its own. An industry tracker wrote, “#Pongal2019 Box-Office Update . At the end of day 2 in Tamil Nadu #Petta leads in Urban areas and multiplexes while #Viswasam is ahead in Semi urban and rural areas dominated by single/double screens. Both can be classified as Hits.”(sic)
