Music Review: Mellisai

No peppy tracks and commercial tunes but the undercurrent of the offbeat in Mellisai shows composer Sam CS has potential

Vellaikkanavu is a lilting melody that starts with smooth strumming of guitar and flute. The vocals by Hariharan and Harini carry the breezy essence effortlessly. The composition is simple and the tune likeable. Lola by Maria Kavitha Thomas is a stylish, mild rock number. Even though there is tempo, the tune lacks punch and seems a bit incomplete.

The other version, by Andrea Jeremiah, sounds better. Parakkiren Naan has a mild Harris Jayaraj touch. Sung by Srinivas and Maria Kavitha Thomas, this melody is instantly likeable. Sam has delved into some interesting variations making it sound a tad different from other melodies. The English version, Take Me Higher, by Kavitha, Suchit and JK, sounds good, too. With Mazhaikkulle, sung by Haricharan and Shreya Goshal, Sam gives us an uncomplicated tune that is pleasing to the ears. The violin interludes need a special mention. This is followed by the films theme music, which is quite gripping and has an element of surprise. No peppy tracks and commercial tunes but the undercurrent of the offbeat shows Sam CS has potential.
