‘Junga’ to ‘Chekka Chivantha Vaanam’: A look at Vijay Sethupathi’s upcoming projects

In a short span of time, Vijay Sethupathi has established himself as one of the biggest stars among the younger lot. He’s someone who has a relevance in the Northern belt as well, thanks to the success of films like ‘Soodhu Kavvum’, ‘Iraivi’ and ‘Vikram Vedha’ to name a few. Currently, Vijay Sethupathi seems to be doing big in the industry. With back-to-back projects, Vijay is certainly the busiest star around. Last seen in ‘Oru Nalla Naal Paathu Solren’, here’s a list of Vijay Sethupathi’s films to look forward.

‘Junga’

‘Makkal Selvan’ Vijay Sethupathi is presently gearing up for the release of ‘Junga’, which is slated to release on July 27. The film will reportedly clash with Trisha-starrer ‘Mohini’ on the same date. ‘Junga’ created good buzz when the makers released the theatrical trailer earlier this year. Touted to be a gangster comedy, the film is being directed by Gokul of ‘Rowthiram’ fame. Being made on a big budget, the film has Sayyeshaa playing the leading lady, while Siddharth Vipin has composed the music for the film. Produced by Vijay Sethupathi himself under the banner Vijay Sethupathi Productions, ‘Junga’ also stars Madonna Sebastian playing a cameo appearance, while Yogi Babu will be seen in an important role.

‘96’

Even before its release, ‘96’ has made a strong impression on the audiences. Recently, the much-awaited teaser of ‘96’ was released on YouTube to terrific reception. The film, on many levels, seems to be a promising and feel-good drama that appears to focus on the relationship between Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha Krishnan. Apart from the beautiful visuals, the highlight of the teaser was the promo song. Reportedly, the film tracks Vijay Sethupathi’s life from an early age to 96. Produced by Madras Enterprises, the film also stars Janagaraj, S Janaki, Kaali Venkat and Aadukalam Murugadoss in important roles. Govind Menon is scoring the music for the film. If reports are to be believed, ‘96’ is expected to release this year.

‘Chekka Chivantha Vaanam’

Vijay Sethupathi is working with master filmmaker Mani Ratnam for the upcoming ‘Chekka Chivantha Vaanam’, which is easily the most awaited Tamil film this year. The film, that began production earlier this year, has been wrapped and is currently in its post-production stage. The main highlight of ‘Chekka Chivantha Vaanam’ is its huge star cast that includes some A-list of actors like Simbu, Vijay Sethupathi, Arvind Swami, Arun Vijay, Jyothika, Aishwarya Rajesh and Aditi Rao Hydari in lead roles. Produced by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions, the film has music by AR Rahman. ‘Chekka Chivantha Vaanam’ has huge expectations and is expected to release by the end of this year.

‘Super Deluxe’

‘Super Deluxe’ is one of the big-ticket films to look forward to this year. Starring Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil and Samantha Akkineni in lead roles, ‘Super Deluxe’ is directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja. The makers released the first look poster last year, which went viral on the internet. Reportedly, ‘Super Deluxe’ will see Vijay Sethupathi playing the role of a transgender called Shilpa. Ever since his debut, Vijay Sethupathi has been choosy when it comes to scripts and ‘Super Deluxe’ is no different. Jointly written by Thiagarajan Kumararaja, Mysskin, Nalan Kumarasamy and Neelan K Sekar, ‘Super Deluxe’ has music by Yuvan Shankar Raja. ‘Super Deluxe’ is one of the most awaited films as it marks Kumararaja’s second directorial after his celebrated ‘Aaranya Kaandam’.

‘Seethakaathi’

Following the commercial success of ‘Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom’, Vijay Sethupathi and Balaji Tharaneetharan are once again coming together for ‘Seethakaathi’, which appears to be a promising drama. According to reports, Vijay Sethupathi is said to be playing a dual role for the first time in his career. In fact, ‘Seethakaathi’ will see Vijay in the role of an 80-year-old drama artist. When the first look poster of ‘Seethakaathi’ released earlier this year, the audiences compared Vijay Sethupathi’s look to that of Kamal Haasan’s from ‘Indian’. Produced by Passion Studios, the film also stars Parvathy, Archana, Gayathrie and J Mahendra in important roles. Music composer Govind Menon is in charge of the music department.

Rajinikanth’s yet-untitled project

Putting all the rumours to rest, the makers of superstar Rajinikanth’s forthcoming yet-untitled film announced that Vijay Sethupathi’s association with the project. Being directed by Karthik Subbaraj, ‘Thalaivar 165’, as it's popularly known, will see Vijay Sethupathi playing the main antagonist and we can’t wait to watch the Rajini-Vijay duo on screen. Touted to be an action drama, the film stars Bobby Simha, Sanath Reddy, Munishkanth and Megha Akash and Deepak Ramesh in important roles. Reportedly, the project is being made on a lavish budget by Sun Pictures and is expected to release in 2019. Meanwhile, Vijay Sethupathi will join the sets soon.

‘Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy’

Vijay Sethupathi will soon be making his Tollywood debut with the forthcoming period-drama ‘Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy’, which is one of the biggest Telugu films in production. Apparently, Vijay Sethupathi has been roped in to play a pivotal role in the film. The period drama will chronicle the life of Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy, a freedom fighter from Rayalaseema, who fought against the British army. Produced by Konidela Production Company, the film will see Chiranjeevi essaying the titular role. To be made on a lavish budget, the film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Nayanthara, Jagapathi Babu and Sudeep in prominent roles. AR Rahman was supposed to compose the music. However, he backed out due to unknown reasons. The much-awaited film is expected to release next year.
