TS Suresh Babu did the screenplay and Sohan Roy has produced this movie. The film is the world’s first charity film and is made under the CSR films category. The movie also vies for nominations in the Best Picture category at the Oscars.
The complete profit from the movie will be used for the rehabilitation of the landless people and to support women empowerment programmes, two of the sensitive topics the movie deals with.
Kaanal Neer is based on a feature that appeared in one of the most popular Indian dailies about a family that found shelter under a bridge in Kochi, India. Many of the landless people are in search of shelters to protect their women from the city dwellers to avoid the risk of sexual abuse. The movie also throws light on land struggles that happen in the country, which is seldom neglected by the authorities. It also reflects the red-tapism in India and the failure of the bureaucracy to provide a helping hand to the needy.
The movie has been selected and screened in several international and national film festivals and gained appreciation.
