When Kamal Haasan broke his silence about his divorce from first wife Vani Ganapathy: 'It went beyond caring...'

Kamal Haasan’s recent film Thug Life is making waves in theatres, and the actor has never failed to make headlines for his personal life—especially when it comes to his marriage and love life. His first marriage was to classical dancer Vani Ganapathy in 1978. Kamal and Vani ended their marriage after a decade. Kamal once opened up about the divorce and why it did not work for him.

At the time when Kamal and Vani met for the first time through a mutual friend, she did not believe in live-in relationships, and they decided to marry officially.

The situation escalated when rumours emerged about Kamal’s growing closeness to actress Sarika. Allegations suggested that the relationship with Sarika began even before his divorce from Vani was finalised.

Speaking to Simi Garewal in an old interview, Kamal shared his perspective on the split:
“It wasn’t working, at least for me. I won’t lie. It went beyond caring; it became harsh and I wanted to be happy. I was fast losing faith in the institution of marriage itself at that time. I always spoke of it loudly, to the shock of people. I said it on the first day I got married that I didn’t want to,” he admitted.

Following his separation from Vani, Kamal continued his relationship with Sarika, and the couple reportedly began living together. Sarika gave birth to their first daughter, Shruti Haasan, and the two tied the knot later. They later welcomed a second daughter, Akshara, in 1991. However, his marriage with Sarika also officially ended in 2004.
