Tamil cinemas top comedians are turning bad guys. Yes, Vivekh and M S Baskar, two of Kollywoods leading comedians, are now getting ready to play roles with shades of grey! While Vivekh will play the role of a psycho in an untitled film directed by debutant Anbuchezhian, M S Baskar is all set to play a conventional villain in the P Vasu-directed Puli Vesham, which has RK and Sadaa in the main lead.
In an exclusive interview to CT, Vivekh said, Ive been doing comedy roles for the last 25 years and needed a change. When Anbuchezhian narrated the story to me, I thought Id take it up as a challenge and play a negative role. After all, isnt variety the spice of life?
The untitled film has Vivek playing a psycho who manages to hitch-hike a lift in a car whose occupants are a newly-married couple on their way to their honeymoon. Mithun, who acted with the comedian in Magane En Marumagane, is playing the hero and a new girl will play the female lead.
Explains Vivekh, There are just three characters in this thriller. Im playing a psycho who has a past, which is told in a flashback. My look and mannerisms are going to be different, something that audiences have not seen before.
Commenting on his decision, M S Baskar, who is playing villain for the first time in his career, says, I have always loved doing important character roles, like the ones in Mozhi or Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam. Those got me a lot of accolades. So, when director P Vasu offered me the role of the main villain in Puli Vesham, I took it up as a challenge to prove my versatility. I think I need to experiment with my characters. Thats how Ill grow as an actor. In fact, before I took up comedy, I was a dubbing artist and have dubbed for various artists in over 500 films.
However, a leading Tamil director, on condition of anonymity, remarks, It is a tough ask for a comedian to play villain. Some have tried it before but have failed in their efforts to be accepted by the masses due to their image as a comedian. Vivekh and MSB have to be praised for having the guts to move away from the beaten track.
