​'Virumandi' to 'Uriyadi': Five Tamil films that changed their titles before their release

There are a lot of new releases coming in Tamil film industry every year, and many new talents making their entry into cinema. Once the film is kickstarted officially, the makers announce the title, while few announce it when proceeding ahead. The makers choose an apt title for the film, which matches the film's subject. But sometimes, things change, plots change, thoughts change and makers choose to go for alternate trendy titles. Here is a look at five Tamil films from 'Virumundi' to 'Uriyadi' that changed their titles before their release.

​'Virumaandi' - 'Sandiyar'

Kamal Haasan's action drama 'Virumaandi', which was directed by the star himself, received an amazing response. The film was first launched in Madurai in April 2003 under the title 'Sandiyar', but later it got changed due to some reasons. The art director of the film Prabhakar had recreated the set of Madurai villages in a studio in Chennai. The music of the film was scored by Ilayaraja, while the cinematography was handled by Keshav Prakash.

​'Ullam Ketkume' - 'Pepsi'

The romantic drama 'Ullam Ketkume', which was directed by Jeeva, starred Shaam, Arya, Laila, Asin, and Pooja in lead roles. The film was originally titled 'Pepsi', and it was originated from the first letter of the names of the five friends. The film is about the reunion of five college friends and their love stories. Harris Jayaraj had scored the music for the film, and it received great success at the box office

'Varalaru' - 'God Father'

Ajith teamed up with director KS Ravikumar for the third time for the film 'Varalaru', and it was released during the occasion of 2006 Diwali. Ajith played a triple role as a father and two sons, and it turned out to be the biggest grosser of the year. The film was first titled as 'God Father' since it revolves around the life of father Ajith. Asin and Kanika played as the female leads, while Ramesh Khanna, Suman Setty, Sujatha, and MS Baskar played supporting roles.

​'Kaavalan' - 'Kaaval Kadhalan' and 'Kaavalkaaran'

'Kaavalan' was the Tamil remake of Malayalam blockbuster 'Bodyguard', and it featured Vijay, Asin, and Mithra Kurian in the lead roles. Initially, the makers had planned to name the film as 'Kaaval Kadhalan' and 'Kaavalkaaran'. The makers faced complications in obtaining the rights of MGR's 'Kavalkaran', then they titled the film as 'Kaavalan'.

'Uriyadi' - 'Vidiyum Varai Vimeengal'

'Uriyadi' was about caste-based politics, and the story of the film was about three different sets of characters. 'Uriyadi' starred Vijay Kumar in the lead role, and he himself directed and produced the film. The movie was first titled as 'Vidiyum Varai Vimeengal', but later the makers opted for the catchy title 'Uriyadi', which turned as a super hit. The film received positive reviews from critics and audiences and is considered as the best by the director.
