Seven years of 'Jigarthanda': Here’s how Karthik Subbaraj shaped the characters in this thriller

After delivering a blockbuster horror drama 'Pizza', Karthik Subbaraj channeled his filmmaking skills for ‘Jigarthanda’. The action thriller was a perfect blend of arthouse as well as a commercial movie. From its intriguing plot to brilliant edits and creative music, the film has struck the right chord with its audience. 'Jigarthanda' is completing seven years of its release today and on this occasion, let’s take a look at how Karthik Subbaraj has intricately moulded each and every character in the film.

Assault Sethu

Assault Sethu played by Bobby Simha is not born as a gangster. Like many, the circumstances make him one. And Karthik Subbaraj has underlined the same by sketching the childhood of Sethu. Sethu was just a kid, when he was participating in a stage play based on Mahabharatha. Little Sethu was dressed as Panchali and in the particular scene of Panchali Vasthraharan, the kid dressed as Krishna fails to enter and Sethu ends up in his knickers. Karthik Subbaraj has symbolized the ‘absence of Krishna’ and Sethu being half naked as the end of Sethu’s innocence. The Vastraharan also marks the end of Sethu’s acting career. His life comes in a full circle, in the climax scene, where he enters the theatre, as an actor and a more compassionate human being. Bobby Simha won the National Award for Best supporting actor for the same.

Karthik Subramani

Siddharth stepped into the shoes of Karthik Subramani, an aspiring filmmaker. Karthik has a short film to his credit and is broken by the negative reviews he received. At the beginning of the film, Karthik is shy and skeptical about his work, but gets transforms into a confident filmmaker. From an aspiring filmmaker, who cannot take criticism and is afraid about failure and everything in life to finally making a film with Sethu, a goon and later approaching a lead actor (Vijay Sethupathi) for dates for his upcoming directorial, Karthik Subbaraj has magnificently portrayed the progression of Karthik Subramani.

Oorni

Oorni (Karunakaran) is Karthik’s friend. Oorni dreams of becoming an actor. Despite not having enough talent to play the role, he tries to bag a role in Karthik’s film. Karunakaran gave an impressive performance as Oorni in the film and he surely made the audience laugh their lungs out.

Kayalvizhi

Kayalvizhi is yet another interesting character the director has shaped with care. Lakshmi Menon played the role of Kayalvizhi. Kayalvizhi is a thief and makes a living out of petty thefts. She falls in love with Karthik (Siddharth) and helps him in making the movie. Although Kayalvizhi is a thief, her love for Karthik is true and real.

Muthu

Muthu is the acting guru. Guru Somasundaram played the role of Muthu and although the screen space was less compared to others he surely grabbed the attention of the audience. From helping Karthik (Siddharth) in selecting the star cast for his film to training them, Muthu is a pivotal character in the film.
