As the happy Pongal festival approaches, the Tamil film industry expessed its displeasure at the service tax imposed on them. January 7 saw a one day fast where film shootings stood cancelled but movies were screened in theatres.
The entire Tamil film industry - sans a few big names - joined the fast that was led by Sharath Kumar against the 12.36 per cent service tax levy.

Gathering at Valluvar Kottam, stars from Vijay and Suriya to Karthi, Jiiva, Jayam Ravi and Vishal and directors like Bharathiraja and SAC, made sure they made their presence felt on this occasion. Many of them, including Rajinikanth, spoke on this occasion.
Rajinikanth said he supported the one day fast and urged the government to remove the service tax with immediate effect. He added that imposing this would only lead to an increase in black money. He said that those who evaded taxes should be the ones to be acted upon.
