'Nayakan' and 'Thug Life': Untold connections between Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's masterpiece

After about four decades, legendary actor Kamal Haasan and acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam have once again come together, this time for the much-awaited 'thug life'. His first cooperation, 'Nayakan' (1987), is now considered a milestone in Indian cinema. Despite the long gaps, both films echo each other in tone, theme, and emotional depth. To be another cinematic milestone with 'Thug Life', fans and critics equally have been made early to notice the complicated equality between the two tasks. Let us dive into the five major similarities connecting 'Nayakan' and 'Thug Life'.

2/6

Gangster narratives at their core

Both films anchor their story in the gritty world of gangsters. 'Nayakan' discovered the rise of Sakthivel Naicker, a person who develops from a slum to a revered mafia leader in the chaotic underworld in Bombay. In 'Thug Life', the story revolves around a mafia figure Sakthivel, a mafia figure located in Delhi, who climbs a ruthless mission of revenge. In both narratives, the gangster backdrop not only sets the tone for action and strength conflict but also frames the emotional arcs of the central characters.

3/6

Familiar name, familiar souls

Mani Ratnam has paid tribute to his earlier work by maintaining the name continuity for Kamal Haasan's characters. In 'Nayakan', Kamal Haasan lovingly referred to Sakthivel Naicker as Velu. In the 'Thug Life', his new avatar is named Rangarayaa Sakthivel. This deliberate naming option not only shakes apathy but also suggests a spiritual relationship or symbolic lineage between the two heroes.

4/6

Fragmented family and emotional conflict

Family dynamics produce the emotional spine of both films. In 'Nayakan', Sakathivale shaped his vision about justice and loyalty, struggling with his father's trauma of losing the police for the barbarity of the police. The 'Thug Life', a more trusted twist, is cheated by his own foster son, Amaran, which leads to a cruel internal struggle. These emotional subplots underline Mani Ratnam's 'Nayakan' to weave personal pain in large-scale narratives.

5/6

Moral ambiguity and human complexity

Makes both the characters so compelling that they have layered morality. Kamal Haasan's roles in both films challenge the audience to see beyond the surface. Although these characters are immersed in violence and crime, these characters have a sense of personal justice and unresolved shock that humanize them. Mani Ratnam refused to introduce him as a lump-sum villain or hero, instead of keeping him in the grey spectrum morally.

6/6

Scars of the past that shape the future

Finally, both films find out how unresolved become catalysts for trauma and betrayal change. In 'Nayakan', a fatherless child becomes a frightened don. In 'Thug Life', a betrayal transforms into a person seeking a guardian vengeance. Their pain is not just backstory, it is the engine that operates their functions, decisions, and destiny.

Together, 'Nayakan' and 'Thug Life' work as two powerful books for a long-standing cooperation that is captive to the audience.
