Hansika, who started her career as a child artist in Hindi films like Koi Mil Gaya, is strongly tipped by industry pundits to be the next big thing. Talking exclusively to CT, Hansika opens up on the eve of the release of her debut film in Tamil, Mappillai. You have been making waves in Kollywood without a single release...Im truly blessed. There is something about me which has caught the attention of the Tamil audiences.
I could feel it even while shooting for my films in Pollachi, Theni and Chennai. I had an instant rapport with them. Otherwise, how could I do four films in Tamil Mappillai, Engeyum Kathal, Velayudham and now Oru Kal Oru Kannadi (OKOK), without a release?
The industry buzz is that you look like Kushboo, when she first entered the industry. Several fans too feel the same way. They refer to you as Chinna Kushboo...I think it is the best compliment that I have received so far.
How was it doing your debut film Mappillai?I think the producers and the director Suraj have given me a fantastic opening to Tamil cinema in a tailor-made role for me. As you know, Mappillai is a remake of Rajinikanth sirs evergreen hit. I play the role done by Amala in the original, with Dhanush playing the title role and
Manisha Koirala playing my mom. Director Suraj has made some changes to the script to make it suit the taste of todays audiences. My character and its importance have been enhanced. Mappilai is a mass entertainer and I had a blast doing it.
How varied are your roles in the four films you are doing in Tamil?Im doing four different types of characters. In Mappillai, the heroine is what you see in mass commercial movies and as a launch film, it is important for me. But in Engeyum Kathal, it is a romantic, performance-oriented role. While in Velayudham, I play a bubbly village girl, in OKOK, I play a city girl with a lot of attitude.
What is your criteria for doing a film?First and foremost, the role should interest me and then, I sit with the team and do a lot of homework to make my character work on screen. Im learning Tamil and also trying to talk to my assistants in the language. My dream is to dub for a Tamil film.
