On the sets of Artham with Master Mahendran and Shraddha Das

When we entered the set of Master Mahendran’s upcoming film, Artham, the team was busy shooting for an important scene in the film. With Mahendran in a serious situation, and Shraddha Das, the film’s other lead, tries to rescue him.

This is Mahendran's first tryst with an out-and-out horror film

"It is a love-cum-horror film. Even though I have done a horror film as a child artiste, where I played a negative role, this is my first tryst with an out-and-out horror film. I love this genre as there is much you can do as an actor to perform well. In that sense, it is an interesting film. I am glad that this is a trilingual project, too," says Mahendran.

Shraddha Das plays a psychiatric investigator

Shraddha says, "I studied journalism and psychology and it is interesting to play the role of psychiatric investigator, Maya, in the film. There will be a series of murders in the film, which I will investigate. Horror films tend to be over-the-top, but this film is not like that. Also, I have gone subtle with expressions, too. It was fun for all of us to be put together in a house for the shoot. All the characters have a different points of view and it was interesting to work with the team."

Ajay plays the baddie

Artham is a suspense thriller, with interesting twists and turns. This particular scene comes right at the pre-climax. The hero will be in search of his girlfriend, and Shraddha, who investigates the case, helps him as he gets into a serious situation, involving villain Ajay.

Why director Manikanth made this film in three languages

The director decided to do it as a trilingual — Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi — as Mahendran is known in Tamil and Telugu film industries, while Shraddha is known in Telugu and Hindi film industries. He decided to make use of their markets and make this film in three languages.

Cinematographer Pavan Chenna has played with natural light & sepia tone

Horror films rely mainly on cinematography. The visuals must induce that fear among audiences. And we have worked on that with this film. We’ve played with natural light for most part of the film and went with a sepia tone for the horror bits. Most of the portions happen inside the house and we’ve elevated the location to the maximum. Clothes, props and other things, too, are done in a manner that will look natural in the film.
