Mari Selvaraj's directorial 'Vaazhai' was released in theatres on Aug 23, and the film has been earning wide praise from fans and cinema stars. As the film keeps climbing well at the box office, 'Vaazhai' faces a plagiarism issue after writer Cho Dharman stood against the film through a social media post. According to Cho Dharman, the popular writer has been receiving several phone calls from many friends regarding 'Vaazhai' as the film's story looked similar to one of the former's short stories.

Cho Dharman then watched 'Vaazhai' and clarified that he wrote the short story inspired by the life of people in Ponnankurichi, near Thiruvaikundam, where his brother and maternal uncle were born. Whenever he goes there, he sees the hardships of the children carrying bananas (Vaazhai) and he wrote his short story 'Vazhaiyadi'. But unlike Mari Selvaraj, he said different points through his short story. Vaazhai is celebrated because it came to the mass medium of cinema. But Cho Dharman wrote the short story ten years ago, and he feels happy that a film similar to his story is being celebrated today. Cho Dharman feels proud as a creator. 'Vaazhai' short story is included as the second story in his collection of short stories as 'Neerpali'.

Mari Selvaraj has also responded to Cho Dharman's claim and wrote on his social media page that "I have just read a short story by author Cho Dharman called 'Vazhaiyadi', about the workers lifting the load of bananas. Everyone must read this story, thanks to writer Cho Dharman" and shared the link to the short story.
