Karuppu & Blast power K-Town’s summer surge

Summer 2026 may not have delivered the flood of blockbusters that the Tamil film industry traditionally expects from its most lucrative season, but two films — Karuppu and Blast — emerged as the saviours at the box office.

With the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections casting a long shadow over theatrical business, the prolonged election cycle, coupled with audiences being preoccupied with political developments, initially kept the footfalls low, share industry stakeholders.



WHAT WAS THE SUMMER 2026 LIKE?G Dhananjheyan, producer and distributor, believes the season could have performed much better. “The Assembly elections in April and the long wait for the results dampened the audience’s mood. However, we’ve had back-to-back hits in Karuppu and Blast after the new government was formed.”

Tirupur Subramaniam, distributor and exhibitor, says, “In these past two months, other than Karuppu and Blast , no other film has succeeded. Though Blast ’s opening day numbers weren’t much, it went on to do well. It shows that if the content is good, the film will run.”

THE KARUPPU WAVEAccording to distributor and creative producer KB Sriram, Karuppu has turned out to be a film that generated profits across the trade chain. “ Karuppu is the first film of the year that made everyone — producers, distributors and exhibitors — happy. It emerged as a major driving force for Tamil cinema, with theatre footfalls seeing a significant boost,” he says.

It has also become an all-time blockbuster for Suriya across all centres, including overseas markets and the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Kerala, he adds.

Ankitha Prakash of Varadaraja Cinemas echoes the sentiment. “It was sold out continuously on multiple screens, as the demand was very high. People were getting divine intervention, which was something I’d never seen, and I’ve been an exhibitor for 10 years now.” THE SLEEPER HIT Blast , released in the final week of the summer, has been the season’s surprise hit. Sriram says, “ Blast has exceeded all expectations and is delivering outstanding box-office collections. Good content along with positive word of mouth leads to box-office success.”

THE TOP FIVE IN THE FIRST FIVE!Exhibitor CT Valliappan of Kamala Cinemas gives us a rundown of the best performers of the first-half of 2026. “ Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil ( TTT ), Thaai Kizhavi , Youth , Karuppu and Blast are the films that did very well at the box office. When Jana Nayagan ’s release was postponed, TTT came to our rescue unexpectedly. Then came Thaai Kizhavi , which surprised everyone, followed by Youth, which brought in youngsters in droves. Karuppu , which started with a hiccup (its release was postponed by a day at the last minute), blew up. And, Blast is blasting its way into people’s hearts.”

SUMMER 2025 WAS BIGGER, BETTERTrade observers note that Summer 2025 had a stronger lineup. Dhananjheyan points out, “During April-May 2025, there were 42 new releases, with multiple hits like Good Bad Ugly , Maaman and Eleven . In 2026, there have been 30 releases and only two hits.”

But Ankitha believes comparing this summer to the last one is unfair. “There can be no direct comparison because of the elections,” she reasons. Agreeing that people were in the election mode and didn’t give too much attention to films this summer, Karthik Ravivarma, distributor, shares that it was Karuppu which brought in major relief. “The film has collected ₹300 crore worldwide so far and over ₹150 crore at the Tamil Nadu box office. If not for it, the overall collections would’ve been a disaster,” he says.

Other language releases disappointEven the performance of non-Tamil releases was mixed. Sriram notes, “Films like Patriot and Drishyam 3 were expected to perform strongly, but failed to make the desired impact in Tamil Nadu.” Subramaniam, meanwhile, says that while Drishyam 3 fared decently, Hollywood films were not of much help. “Overall, the first five months have been average,” he says. Ankitha shares that multiplex audiences supported a few Hollywood titles. “ Michael did decently well for us and we played it on our second largest screen. So did Lee Cronin’s The Mummy .”
