Karthi to Sivakarthikeyan: Five Tamil stars who are engineering graduates

September 15th is observed as National Engineers’ Day in India to appreciate the contributions of engineers to the development of the country. Tamil cinema also has several engineering graduates, and many have changed professions for their passion for cinema. On National Engineers’ Day let’s take a look at the five Tamil stars who were engineers.

Karthi, the younger son of a veteran actor Sivakumar, was working as an engineer until he stepped into cinema. Karthi has completed his Mechanical Engineering at Crescent Engineering College, Chennai, and he was working as a consultant in Chennai for a monthly salary. He also completed his Master in Industrial Engineering, and he opted to do filmmaking as his elective course, which later drove him to become a famous actor.

Sivakarthikeyan completed B.E in JJ College of Engineering and Technology in Trichy. He participated in various cultural events, performed mimicry and stand-up comedy on stage during his college days. It made him transform into an entertainer, and he started his career as an anchor in television shows and Later landed in cinema.

R Madhavan is a proud graduate of a Bachelors’ in Mechanical Engineering, and he completed the course in IIT Madras. Madhavan was doing a television commercial at the beginning, and it later drove him to enter the cinema. Madhavan made his debut as a hero with Mani Ratnam's 'Alaipayuthey', and he played the role of a software engineer in the romantic drama.

Prasanna completed EEE in Saranathan College of Engineering, Tiruchirapalli, and he attended the audition for Susi Ganesan's 'Five Star', which made him an actor. Even though his parents were unhappy with his decision, his continuous success in cinema relieved their worries. Prasanna then started doing films across languages and emerged as a popular South Indian actor.

Director-actor Gautham Menon has graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Mookambigai College of Engineering, Pudukkottai. Gautham Menon's fascination with engineering has made the director to mould characters that share the same profession. The director's debut film 'Minnale' is also about a life of a Mechanical Engineer, and the film received a huge response amongst the movie buff.
