Though gangster dramas and romcoms are often in trend, actors have also attempted playing the role of laymen. Suriya is said to be playing a fisherman in his next film with director Bala, and the film shoot kick-started a few days back. 'Kadal Meengal'

Kamal Haasan played a dual role as a father and son in the 1981 Tamil film 'Kadal Meengal', which was directed by GN Rangarajan. The story of the film is about a fisherman and his separation from wife and son to become a popular businessman. But his son takes revenge on him for the separation and develops into a famous fisherman.

'Kattumarakaran'

Prabhu played the role of a fisherman in the 1995 romantic drama 'Kattumarakaran', which was directed by P Vasu. Even though the film is set on a fishing backdrop, it revolves around the love story between the lead stars Prabhu and Eva Grover. 'Kattumarakaran' was a huge hit at the box office, and the film later had a dubbed Telugu version.

'Mariyaan'

Dhanush played the role of a fisherman in 'Mariyaan', which was directed by Bharat Bala, while Parvathy Menon played his love interest. The story of the film is about a fisherman, who moves for a job abroad, and gets caught by terrorists. Dhanush developed himself as a pro swimmer to shoot some deep water shots for the film.
