Vairamuthu was born on July 13, 1953, in Vadugapatti, Theni district. He has received many accolades including the Kalaimamani Award, the Sahitya Akademi Award, and the Padma Bhushan Award. Vairamuthu is fondly called Kavi Samrat, and social media is flooded with wishes as the famous lyricist celebrates his 68th birthday today. Vairamuthu has won the National Film Award for best lyricist seven times, and let’s have a look at seven films of the lyricist that won him the prestigious award.

'Muthal Mariyathai' - 1985

Vairamuthu has penned the lyrics for songs in Sivaji Ganesan starrer 'Muthal Mariyathai', which was directed by Bharathiraja. Vairamuthu explored a variety of emotions in the songs in the film, and it bagged him the National Award.

'Roja' - 1992

Vairamuthu's association with Mani Ratnam has always resulted in gems. He has penned the lyrics for almost every Mani Ratnam film, and Chinna Chinna Aasai from 'Roja' is a special one! The song portrays the desires of a person in the most poetic way.

'Karuththamma' and 'Pavithra'- 1994

Vairamuthu has not only associated with veteran filmmakers but also emerging directors. AR Rahman has scored the music for the 1994 films 'Karuththamma' and 'Pavithra', and he roped in Vairamuthu to pen the lyrics. Poralae Ponnuthayi and Uyirum Neeye are the two melodies from the films 'Karuththamma' and 'Pavithra' respectively and both the songs are sure to melt your hearts.

'Sangamam' - 1999

Apart from meaningful emotional songs, Vairamuthu has also written lyrics for some heartwarming melodies, and Mudhal Murai Killi Parthen from 'Sangamam' is one among them. The song grabbed the attention of youngsters as it describes the depth of love.

'Kannathil Muthamittal' - 2002

'Kannathil Muthamittal' is one of the best films by Mani Ratnam, and the song Oru Deivam Thantha Poove explains the bond between a mother and her child. Vairamuthu penned the National Award-winning lyrics and AR Rahman composed the music.
