From Kamal Haasan to Ajith Kumar: Tamil stars who delivered diverse roles in the same year

In Tamil cinema, versatility has always been celebrated, and some actors have gone above and beyond by delivering drastically different performances in two major films within the same year. From comedy to intense drama, action to romance, these stars showcased their range, leaving a lasting impression on audiences and critics alike. Here's a look at Tamil actors who took on contrasting roles in the same year and proved their acting mettle.

2/11

Kamal Haasan (2004): Vasool Raja MBBS and Virumaandi

Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan stunned fans in 2004 with two polar opposite roles. In Vasool Raja MBBS, he played a comical and endearing don-turned-doctor in the Tamil remake of Munna Bhai MBBS. In contrast, Virumaandi, which he also directed, featured him in a gritty, rural drama exploring justice and the death penalty, showcasing his unparalleled range.

3/11

Rajinikanth (1995): Baashha and Muthu

1995 was a landmark year for Superstar Rajinikanth. Baashha, the cult gangster film, redefined his mass image, while Muthu, directed by K.S. Ravikumar, became a pan-Indian hit with Rajini portraying a soft-spoken, loyal charioteer in a royal household. Both characters were iconic, yet strikingly different.

4/11

Vijay (2012): Nanban and Thuppakki

In 2012, Vijay balanced brains and brawn. As a genius engineering student in Nanban (a remake of 3 Idiots), he delivered a performance filled with charm and emotion. In Thuppakki, he transformed into a tough and smart military officer, cementing his action-hero status.

5/11

Suriya (2003): Pithamagan and Kaakha Kaakha

2003 marked Suriya’s breakthrough as a serious actor. While Kaakha Kaakha saw him as a no-nonsense cop in a sleek action thriller, Pithamagan featured him as a warm-hearted conman, offering a balance to Vikram's intense role, a contrast that won him praise for emotional depth.

6/11

Vikram (2003): Pithamagan and Saamy

Vikram displayed incredible diversity in 2003. In Pithamagan, he played the unforgettable role of Chithan, a graveyard caretaker with minimal dialogue but maximum impact. In Saamy, he flipped the script as a flamboyant and sharp-tongued cop, two extremes pulled off with ease.

7/11

Dhanush (2011): Aadukalam and Mayakkam Enna

Dhanush proved his mettle as an intense performer in 2011. Aadukalam, which earned him a National Award, featured him as a cockfighting champion navigating love and betrayal. Mayakkam Enna portrayed him as a struggling, emotionally volatile photographer, raw and vulnerable.

8/11

Silambarasan (2004): Kovil and Manmadhan

In 2004, Silambarasan (Simbu) showed his range with Kovil, where he played a calm, love-struck village youth. That same year, he shocked audiences with his dark and dual portrayal in Manmadhan, a romantic thriller with psychological layers.

9/11

Karthi (2010): Paiyaa and Aayirathil Oruvan

Karthi had a remarkable 2010 with two very different avatars. Paiyaa was a modern road romance where he played a carefree, charming man. Aayirathil Oruvan, in contrast, had him as a rugged porter caught in a mythological expedition, eccentric and unforgettable.

10/11

Vijay Sethupathi (2016): Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum and Sethupathi

2016 saw Vijay Sethupathi cementing his status as a versatile actor. In Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum, he was a laid-back ex-rowdy with a soft side in a romantic comedy. Sethupathi brought out his intense cop avatar in a gripping thriller.

11/11

Ajith Kumar (2015): Yennai Arindhaal and Vedalam

Ajith showcased depth and mass appeal in 2015. In Yennai Arindhaal, directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, he played a cop with a complex past and layered emotions. In Vedalam, he turned into a larger-than-life mass hero with a dual shade, charming and ferocious.
