'Deiva Magan' to 'Visaaranai': Tamil films that were selected for the Oscars

Academy Awards (Oscars) is a prestigious award, and it's a dream for many to bag it. Recently, Suriya's 'Soorarai Pottru' is selected under several categories for the nomination process of Oscars, and fans are happy to see a regional film achieve high levels. Winning Oscars not only makes the winner proud it also makes the whole country proud, and wishes have been pouring for the 'Soorarai Pottru' team to bag an award at the grand stage. Here we compile a list of Tamil films that were selected for the Oscars earlier.

'Deiva Magan' - 1969

The 1969 Tamil drama 'Deiva Magan', which was directed by A C Tirulokchandar, features Sivaji Ganesan in a triple role as a father and his two sons. Sivaji Ganesan who is fondly called Nadigar Thilagam displayed brilliant acting, and the film was well celebrated. It was the first Tamil film submitted for Academy Awards, and it was chosen under the Best Foreign Language Film category.

'Nayakan' - 1987

Mani Ratnam's 'Nayakan' featuring Kamal Haasan set an example for a gangster drama, and we can find the film's specimen in many films later. The film was selected under the category- Best Foreign Language Film at the 60th Academy Awards in 1988.

'Anjali' - 1990

Mani Ratnam who failed to achieve the Academy Awards with 'Nayakan', submitted 'Anjali' for Oscars selection, but the film was not nominated for the final list. 'Anjali' received highly positive reviews, and the film bagged three National Awards.

'Thevar Magan' - 1992

'Thevar Magan', which was directed by Bharathan, features Sivaji Ganesan and Kamal Haasan in main roles. 'Thevar Magan' was critically acclaimed, and it was India's official entry for the 65th Academy Awards under the category Best Foreign Language Film.

'Kuruthi Punal' - 1995

'Kuruthi Punal' features Kamal Haasan, Arjun, Nassar, Gouthami, and Geetha in lead roles. The film was popular cinematographer PC Sreeram's second directorial, and it was received well. The Tamil Telugu bilingual was submitted for 68th Academy Awards Best Foreign Language Film category but was not nominated.

'Jeans' - 1998

Director Shankar's 'Jean' features Prashanth and Nassar in dual roles with Aishwarya Rai as the female lead. It was the most expensive film in India at that time, and the director has proved he used the money for a well-made film. 'Jeans' was also submitted for Oscars but failed to make it into the final nominations.

'Hey Ram' - 2000

Kamal Haasan is famous for delivering quality films that will be spoken for a lifetime. 'Hey Ram' is one of those films, he was the actor, director, and producer of the film. 'Hey Ram' was selected for various top awards and was also officially submitted for Oscars.

'Visaaranai' - 2015

After bagging the National Award with 'Aadukalam', director Vetri Maaran came up with 'Visaaranai' in 2015 and delivered a bang. The film based on the novel 'Lock Up' written by M Chandrakumar brought some hidden incidents into the light, and it received several awards. The film was India's entry to Oscars under the category Best Foreign Language Film category but it wasn't nominated.
