'Coolie' vs 'Leo': A box office comparison of Lokesh Kanagaraj's last two films, Thalapathy Vijay's film leads Rajinikanth starrer after 4 day weekend

Lokesh Kanagaraj is one of the most-wanted directors in the South, and his recent release 'Coolie' featuring Rajinikanth is storming theatres across the globe. 'Coolie' has been facing a comparison with Lokesh Kanagaraj's previous directorial, 'Leo', which featured Vijay in the lead role. As Rajinikanth's film completed its first weekend, let's take a look at the box office comparison of 'Coolie' and 'Leo' after 4 days first weekend.

'Leo' leads 'Coolie' in global weekend race

According to box office estimates published by Comscore, there was a very tight competition between Vijay's 'Leo' and Rajinikanth's 'Coolie' in the global opening weekend (4 days) collection. The huge expectations from the fans and the excitement from day one showed clearly in the collection figures. 'Leo' took the lead with a collection of $48.54 million [₹403.50 crore], while 'Coolie' showed its potential from a very tight spot with a collection of $45.34 million [₹397.5 crore]. Thus, it becomes clear how the films of the two biggest stars of Tamil cinema have captivated audiences worldwide, and it is Lokesh Kanagaraj who remains the driving force behind these two films.

3/5

Clash factor and star power at play

But it is worth remembering that 'Leo' had a solo release in Tamil Nadu and other locations, while 'Coolie' faced a box office clash with 'War 2'. However, 'Coolie' had the advantage of having pan-Indian stars across industries like Aamir Khan, Nagarjuna Akkineni, Upendra, and Soubin Shahir to attract the audience of respective regions, whereas 'Leo' had its full focus on the lead actor Thalapathy Vijay. Overall, both films received the same kind of reception from critics and fans, and 'Coolie' is likely to end its box office collection similarly to 'Leo'.

4/5

‘Coolie’: A tale of working-class rebellion

Rajinikanth's 'Coolie' is a film that focuses on the struggle of the working class and its uprising against injustice. The hero, who works as a porter, fights to protect the rights of his people and against the big corporations and officials who exploit them. The film is packed with action, mass scenes, emotions, and punchy dialogues for the fans. It also combines family bonds, friendship, and sacrifice, and carries a strong social message in superstar style.

5/5

‘Leo’: A family man with a dark past

'Leo', starring Vijay, revolves around the life of a family man who lives a quiet life in a cold town in Himachal. But as his past secrets resurface, he finds himself embroiled in a world of violence and the mafia. The main twist of the story is that the peaceful man named "Parthiban" is actually a man with a cruel old identity named "Leo Das". This film combines family affection, mental anguish, and the shadow of old sins with a thrilling screenplay. Meanwhile, 'Leo' had received mixed reviews especially for the second half.
