Diljit Dosanjh is headlining Imtiaz Ali's directed biopic ‘Chamkila’. The story is based on the life of Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamika who was one and to date is considered among the most popular Punjabi singers. He was only in his late 20s when he was gunned down in broad daylight alongside his partner Amarjot Kaur.

Rose to fame right after his first recorded song

Born on July 21, 1960, Amar Singh Chamkila fell for singing at a very young age. He was fond of writing as well. He used to write songs while he was working in a cloth mill. Thereafter, right after his first recorded song ‘Takue Te Takua’, he became a household name. Soon he was given the stage name ‘Chamkila’, which caught on really quickly. After performing with many female singers, he finally paired with Amarjot Kaur.

Performed 366 shows in 365 days

As aforementioned, Chamkila rose to fame instantly. In fact, he was at the peak of his career and popularity when he died. He was called the ‘Elvis of Punjab’, and earning this title was not an easy nut to crack. According to the reports in Chamkila’s biography ‘Awaz Mardi Nahin’, written by Gulzar Singh Shaunki, Amar Singh was so much in demand that there had been a time when he did 366 shows in 365 days.

Amar Singh Chamkila used to write about things that he used to observe around him. His songs talked about the habits of men in Punjab, drug abuse, extramarital relationships, and many taboo topics. His songs like ‘Pehle Lalkare Naal’, ‘Talwar Main Kalgidhar Di’ and albums like ‘Jija Lak Minle’ and ‘Hikk Utte So Ja Ve’ are a few to name from the long list of his hits.

​Amar Singh Chamkila's death

Amar Singh Chamkila was only 27 years old when he breathed his last breath. He was getting out of his car along with his wife for a performance in Mehsampur, Punjab. They were shot down brutally in broad daylight. Their assailants came on bikes and fled the scene after gunning down the singer duo. The case has not been solved to date.
