Independence Day exclusive! Punjabi celebs define freedom in their own words

The meaning of Independence Day for every Indian is one, the day our nation got freedom from the slavery of the Britishers. However, the freedom gifted to us by the national heroes its definition can vary from person to person. Thus, on the special occasion of Independence Day, ETimes asked popular Punjabi celebrities what is the meaning of freedom for them. And here’s what they said:

“The fact that I have the opportunity to speak about freedom is because many brave souls have given the ultimate sacrifice for all of us. What we take for granted today has not come free. Freedom is not free and has been given to us by the brave and honest people of our great country. For me freedom is to work and live as our founding fathers of this great country dreamt for all of us and to give back in our own little way back to this country. Jai hind!”

“As for freedom and independence I will say that any human who can free him/herself from the clutches of our social and parental upbringing conditioning and lead a life free of “log Kya sochenge” syndrome is actually free and independent.”

“Freedom is basically our right to grow, to be successful, to move forward, which today has been misunderstood. Presently, people feel freedom mean insolence; but that’s not freedom. Freedom is the free right to do what it takes to be successful, to develop oneself.”

“There are numerous quotes on the internet, saying freedom is this, freedom is that; according to me, freedom is actually your ability to be open minded and express yourself while understanding the basic structure of the society. By this I mean that one’s word should not be hurting the other. Considering the current scenario and the age of social media, we see people bad mouthing about anything and everything; they forget about their social responsibility as well; that is not freedom. Freedom is enjoying the right to be free-willed but at the same time keeping in mind the dignity of the other person.”

"Freedom according to me is the right to speak your mind and not be judged on the same. For example, if I say that I don’t like Mumbai, then I should be not be bashed on it; people should not be running after my life just because I said so. People have different perspectives, different viewpoints, they should have the right to express them. Again, another example, there are people who like apple and then there are those who don’t, and none of them should be judged on it; that is freedom for me in the true sense."
