From modeling to Bollywood to Pollywood

Here’s how Ranjit Punia’s journey began - “I started my career as a model. I did a lot of fashion modeling assignments in Delhi and Mumbai. From there I entered into the world of films. I did some Bollywood movies, but my roots have always been that of Punjabi. I am born and brought up in Mohali and my first language is also Punjabi. I belong to a Sikh Jatt family. Gradually I started realizing that I should get into Punjabi films as well. In the past few years, their level has also reached top-notch. The production, actors, singers everybody have reached a different level now. It was then I realized that I should get associated with a good production house.”

Ranjit Punia loves his character in his last release - ‘Shava Ni Girdhari Lal’

“The part that I was selected was for a man who is ahead of his time. Even in the way he dresses. He is the only boy in the place that carries himself in trousers and shirt rest all the boys are in the traditional Punjabi attire of chaddar and kurta. This guy is well educated and has completed his education in Lahore. I loved the character instantly and accepted the role.”

Some BTS tales

“So ‘Shava Ni Girdhari Lal’ is a period drama. They have shown the 40s and 50s Punjab. Now the entire movie is not shot in a location, rather they have created the entire set. Complete village set up was made and there were 2 sets. Those sets were mind-blowing. It is very difficult to make such sets for period dramas that can do justice to the movie and the Punjab of those days.”

“It was also very nostalgic. It reminded me of my childhood days to some extent. We used to sleep on the terrace on a cot. The mode of communication and technology was not this advanced. People spent more time with each other during those days. I really loved all that. Life was much simple then.”

Working with Gippy Grewal

“There are a lot of scenes between Gippy and me wherein we disagree on a lot of things.

I am sure the audience will love the movie and its twits and turns. In fact, my next movie is also with his banner which is titled ‘Yaar Mera Titliyan Warga’, based on a famous Punjabi song. I am currently shooting for this movie in Chandigarh.”

Last but not least - Punjabi actor-singer who inspired Ranjit Punia to enter the world of Pollywood

“If we talk about Punjabi films then I believe it should be Gippy Grewal. All of us have seen him grow as an actor. We have witnessed the change in his graph. From singing to acting and then direction and now production. He does everything on his own.”

“Another singer-actor I look up to is Diljit Dosanjh. He has changed the way Bollywood and the audience perceive Sardar actors. He proved the point that turbanators can also play main leads in Hindi movies. He has made all the Sardars like me proud of our culture.”
