Remembering Sadashiv Amrapurkar

Actor Sadashiv Amarpurkar, who won the hearts of many, with his villainous and comic acts in numerous Hindi and Marathi films, passed away on Monday morning. The actor was 64 years old and was being treated for lung infection in a Mumbai hospital. He was born in Ahmednagar near Pune on May 11, 1950. The actor has done more than 300 films in various languages such as Marathi, Hindi, Bengali, Haryanvi and Oriya. Hou De Jarasa Ushir (2013):

In ‘Hou De Jarasa Ushir’ which was the first Marathi film to be selected amongst the top 282 films racing for the Best Film Category in Oscars; Sadashiv played the role of Fakir Baba. His role and look in the film was highly appreciated as he played the central character that brings a twist in the movie. The actor had also sung a song - ‘Dhampak dhampak’ in the film which is probably last song the actor has sung for a movie.

Kadachit (2008):

In this Marathi drama, Amrapurkar played the role of the father of Ashvini Bhave with utter ease. His role as a neurosurgeon’s father who has been accused by his own daughter of killing her mother had many emotional threads. In the film, Amrapurkar had to portray the role of a composed but occasionally angry man. Audience loved the actor in this multifaceted role.

Savarkhed: Ek Gaav (2004) :

In this yet another Marathi drama, that revolved around a village which has been the centre of attraction of many political and business parties, Amrapurkar played a stern villager and stood strong along with the powerhouse performer Vikram Gokhale. The film was a multistarrer but Amrapurkar made his presence felt in the line-up of numerous famous new-generation artists.

Sadak (1991):

Amrapurkar received the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role for the film where he played a eunuch. It was the first Filmare Award given for a negative performance in the history of the Filmfare Awards. The actor’s portrayal of Maharani, a malevolent head who runs a brothel won the film many accolades. The role still remains one of the most memorable roles played by Amrapurkar.

Ishq (1997):

In the comedy flick, Amrapurkar’s portrayal of a villainous father but with funny shades is remembered even today. His dialogues from the movie such as “Aaisi maut maaro inko ki ishq karne waalo ki rooh tak kaanp jaaye” are still popular amongst his fans. The film also starred Ajay Devgn, Kajol, Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla.

Ardh Satya (1983):

It was Amrapurkar’s first appearance on the big screen for which he won the Filmfare Award for the Best Supporting Actor. In the film, he played Rama Shetty, a dodgy local mafia. The actor stood apart even the film had veteran performers like Om Puri, Amrish Puri and Smita Patil amongst others.
