Film: Samit Kakkad’s Uchalya

Film: Samit Kakkad’s Uchalya
Announced: March 2013
Status: On hold due to legal issues
What went wrong: Filmmaker Samit Kakkad announced this film based on the life of the Uchalya community and even launched the film’s first look. The filmmaker had procured the rights of the book Uchalya from author Lakshman Gaikwad. Later the writer took objection and granted the rights of the film to filmmaker Anant Mahadevan. Samit approached Akhil Bhartiya Marathi Chitrapat Mahamandal and the decision went in his favour. The project has been on hold as the writer has filed a suit in court.

Film: Baji Prabhu Deshpande

Film: Baji Prabhu Deshpande

Status: Film stuck in post-production owing to a fall out between the director and producer
What went wrong: Filmmaker Shailesh Nile and producer Sanad Mane had hinted at the possibility of roping in actor Ajay Devgn for the film. They had also said that they would use Hollywood technicians for their `50 crore project based on the historical character of Baji Prabhu Deshpande. The latest is that there has been a fall out between the two film’s makers. Sanjay Sharma, co-producer of Singh Saab The Great has now replaced Mane.

Film: Ajoba

Film: Ajoba
Announced: August 2012
Status: Shoot completed in February 2013
What went wrong: Sujay Dahake’s much awaited project, based on a leopard, which marks the debut of Bollywood actor Urmila Matondkar seems to be stuck. The project’s trailor faced clearance problems in July this year, when The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) had objected to a leopard being exhibited in the film, as a display of this sort is banned in India. Sujay was finally able to convince AWBI that he used stock images and footage of the animal in his film. The filmmaker now says that the delay is because of some post production work.

Film: Romeo Juliet

Film: Romeo Juliet
Announced: November 2012
Status: Shelved
What went wrong: Director Milind Kavde had announced that he was working on a Marathi adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet with a new cast. He had also said that known actors like Sachin Khedekar, Mohan Joshi and Vinay Apte will be playing important roles in the film. But now Kavde says that despite finalizing the cast of his film, he has decided to shelve the project, fearing a copyright issue with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali over Ram-Leela. The director claims that his film was based on similar lines.

Film: Sankasur

Film: Sankasur

Status: Project on hold
What went wrong: The fate of Ashutosh Rana’s second Marathi release is unknown. Writer-director Dhyaneshwar Margaj who has already shot one leg of the project has put the film on hold. Margaj is now busy with his next project Rajbhasha.

Film: Janmantar
Announced: November 2012, release was planned for January 2013
Status: Project is on hold
What went wrong: Promoted as actor Jackie Shroff’s second Marathi venture, the film is yet to hit the screens. According to director Prasad Tarkar, since the producer is unwell, the film’s shoot has been postponed indefinitely. Sources say that the director has moved on to other projects.

Film: Charlie

Status: Shoot complete but film stuck due to change in producer
What went wrong: This dark comedy was supposed to be a tribute to Hollywood’s comic legend Charlie Chaplin. Sources say that the film is stuck because of producers walking out of the project.

Film: Dhag

Film: Dhag
Announced: December 2011
Status: Unknown
What went wrong: Looks like this National Award winning film is having a tough time finding takers. The film directed by Shivaji Lotan Patil was scheduled to release in May this year, immediately after the National Awards were announced. Its release was later postponed to June and then to November. However, there is no news about its theatrical release yet. Sources inform that the producer is not able to find distributors.

Film: Anntar

Film: Anntar
Announced: February 2013
Status: First leg of the film shot in May, future dates unplanned
What went wrong: Sources indicate that there is trouble brewing between the production house and director Gauri Sarwate. The film, which will be actor Akshay Kumar’s second Marathi production venture, stars Kajol’s younger sister Tanishaa who will be making her debut in Marathi cinema. With only 40% of the film having been shot, there is no immediate plan for the next schedule. Sources also say Tanisha’s stint in the Bigg Boss house has also affected the project.

Film: Nitin Chandrakant Desai’s untitled film on Lokmanya Tilak

Status: Unknown
What went wrong: The filmmaker announced this project based on the life of revolutionary freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak. Soon after his announcement, filmmaker Nikhil Advani too announced his first Marathi production which was also based on Lokmanya Tilak’s life. While the shooting of Nikhil Advani’s film Lokmanya is in progress with actor Subodh Bhave playing the lead, there is no word on Desai’s project. Desai was unavailable for comment, despite several attempts.

What went wrong: Tejaswini Pandit and Piyush Ranade spent considerable time in getting trained for the stunts required for this film. The movie, to be directed by Mangesh Kanthale, was to go on floors mid 2013. However, owing to a fall out with the producers, the film has been postponed till new producers come on board.

Film: 36 Cha Aakda

Status: Shelved
What went wrong: Remake of Laadla, 36 Cha Aakda was to mark Mugdha Godse’s debut in the Marathi film industry. The film, directed by Rajeev Patil, was to go on floors last year, which was later postponed to this year. The project was shelved due to creative differences between the producer and the director.

Film: Anant Mahadevan’s Uchalya

Status: On hold
What went wrong: Anant Mahadevan procured the rights of the book Uchalya from author Lakshman Gaikwad. The project was on hold after Samit Kakkad who was also planning a film on the same subject, objected and claimed that he had the rights to make the film. After the decision of Akhil Bhartiya Marathi Chitrapat Mahamandal went in Samit’s favour, the writer approached the court. The legal proceedings are still on. The project is on hold until the final verdict is out.
