​Week that was! ‘Bro Daddy’ to ‘Hridayam’, here’s what made headlines in M-Town

Ever since the confirmation of Mohanlal’s Marakkar releasing in the cinemas on Onam, the Malayalam entertainment industry has been hopeful. From Prithviraj Sukumaran announcing his second directorial to makers of ‘Hridayam’ giving a sneak peek into the audio track, to veteran filmmaker and cinematographer Sivan bidding adieu, a lot of news came from M-Town this week. Here’s a quick recap of what made headlines in Malayalam cinema this week, in case you have missed any.

Bro Daddy

Prithviraj Sukumaran, who ventured into filmmaking in 2019 with ‘Lucifer’ has finally announced his next - ‘Bro Daddy’. The upcoming film will feature Mohanlal in the lead role and Prithviraj Sukumaran too will play an important role in the film. Meena, Lalu Alex, Kalyani Priyadarshan, Murali Gopi, Kaniha, and Soubin Shahir have roped in to play some important roles in the film. The movie is touted to be a fun family drama and Prithviraj Sukumaran has confirmed that the movie will go on floors soon.

​Lyricist Ramesan Nair no more

Noted Malayalam poet and lyricist S Ramesan Nair passed away on June 18. He was 73. He breathed his last in a private hospital and as per the reports he was undergoing treatment for COVID-19 related complications. He entered M-Town in 1983 by penning songs for the Malayalam movie 'Pathamudayam'. Ramesan Nair is survived by his wife and a son.

​Hridyam track reveal

Makers of ‘Hridayam’ gave a sneak peek into the audio album on World Music Day. The movie has 15 tracks. Many popular playback singers including Hesham Abdul Wahab, KS Chithra, Mohammed Maqbool Mansoor, Sachin Warrier, Job Kurian, Unni Menon, and Aravind Venugopal are lending their voices for the songs in the films. Actors Prithviraj Sukumaran and Darshana Rajendran too have crooned songs in the upcoming film. Meanwhile, ‘Hridayam’ is directed by Vineeth Sreenivasan, and it features Pranav Mohanlal, Kalyani Priyadarshan, and Darshana Rajendran in lead roles.

​Poet-lyricist Poovachal Khader passed away

Veteran poet and lyricist Poovachal Khader passed away on June 22. He was 73. According to the reports, he was under treatment for COVID-related complications. Khader was one of the most sought-after lyricists in the 1970s and 80s. Some of his evergreen songs include Natha nee varum kalocha (Chamaram), Mouname nirayum mouname (Thakara), Etho janma kalpanayil (Palangal), Ithile ekanay (Ottappettavar), Rithumathiyay thelimanam (Mazhanilavu), Anuragini ithayen (Oru Kudakeezhil), Sindoora sandykk maanam (Choola), Pandora Kattiloransimham (Sandarbham), Mandaracheppundo (Dasharatham), among others.

​Cinematographer-filmmaker Sivan no more

National award-winning filmmaker and cinematographer Sivan passed away on June 24. He was 89. According to the reports, Sivan died of sudden cardiac arrest. Sivan was the first government press photographer of Travancore. He entered into the movie industry as a still photographer for the classic Malayalam movie ‘Chemmeen’. He has also directed many films and three of his films - ‘Yagam’, ‘Abhayam’ and ‘Keshu’ have won National awards. Eminent film personalities Sangeeth Sivan, Santosh Sivan, Sanjeev Sivan are his children.
