Valentine's Day special: Neither distance nor religion stopped us from loving each other: Siju Wilson
Sruthi, a banking and insurance professional from Mumbai, was addicted to Chumma - Just fun, a television sitcom, back in 2011. It was before smartphones and technology was all-pervading as it is today. Sruthi pinged Siju Wilson on his social media page, who played a character named Royichan in the sitcom and appreciated his performance.
“Those messages were very official-like. And we only rarely exchanged messages; maybe about once a month or every other month, as we had to find time to go to an internet cafe to access social media. She used to carefully observe my acting and write to me about it. After months of these messages, we decided to exchange phone numbers," Siju recollects.
Once they got to talking on the phone, they became good friends. In 2013, Siju met Sruthi in Mumbai when he visited the location of the Hindi remake of the film Shutter directed by his friend Alphonse Putheran. “That was on November 3. The moment I met her, I proposed to her, and everything was set,” he gushes. They had a four-year romance, but things weren’t easy as they belonged to different religions.
“Those five days were hard, but once when her family met mine and they realised how strong our relationship was, they agreed,” he says. The couple got married according to both Hindu and Christian rituals on the same day. “We had the Hindu rituals in the morning and Christian ceremony in the evening. Now everybody in our families have realised that religion is secondary, and it is all about love and compatibility,” Siju explains.
Siju considers Sruthi his partner and friend. “She is someone with whom I can share my happiness and sadness. The friendship between us is really strong and the love just happened unknowingly. We never looked at the status, religion or the rest when we befriended each other. It was unconditional,” says the actor who is waiting for the release of Mariyam Vannu Vilakoothi and Varthakal Ithuvare.
