It takes one different film to change everything about ones film career. Take Malayalam cinema actress Roma for instance. For someone who would only be seen as the bubbly heroine, she is now taking on roles that promise to thrill. After her stint as the rock star in Grandmaster, the actress seems to be attracted to roles that have been quite unlike what she had been typecast in.Coming up next is V M Vinus Face to Face, wherein she stars alongside
Mammootty. Thrillers are exciting; they are my current muse, says Roma, who adds, It is something completely new, as far as my career is concerned. I had a rock star image in Grandmaster. But here, Ill be playing a more realistic character.
Incidentally, Roma has signed up for two more thrillers for which she will begin shoot later this year. The actress tells us, I would credit Babu Janardhanans Bombay March 12 as my turning point. The director was the first to visualise me in a mature role that broke whatever stereotypes that I may have come under until then.
However, that does not mean Roma has said goodbye to her previous onscreen image. As an actor, it is important to be able to fit into a role that is exciting and challenging, irrespective of the image that it may give you, she says, adding, thats also irrespective of the star cast.
It has taken her a while to start bagging roles opposite the superstars in the Malayalam film industry. But Roma insists, After my debut, I did receive a lot of offers with the superstars. But it was a conscious decision to stay away from such projects. I did not see anything exciting for me in those projects and I didnt want to take up something for the heck of it. Be it with
Mohanlal or Mammootty, if I have a character to play, it has to be something thats worthwhile.
