Veteran actor Suhasini recently spoke about the issues faced by women in the Malayalam film industry and also said that Mollywood is not safe for women to work.
Speaking on 'Women's Safety and Cinema' at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, Suhasini says the Malayalam film industry isn't safe for women because of its working conditions.
She recalled how shoots, often held in isolation, blur professional borders. Mollywood crews numbering hundreds of members live together for weeks or months on location.
"When 200 people live together without strict rules, boundaries can be crossed, knowingly or unknowingly," Suhasini remarked, emphasizing how this creates a higher risk for women.
She compared the Malayalam industry to Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada cinemas, where film shoots take place in relatively more urban settings and people respect each other's private space. Sharing her husband's Mani Ratnam experience of banning someone from his set for'misbehavior', she pointed out that when people know they are answerable, it is a huge safety mechanism.
Meanwhile, Suhasini’s statements come after the unveiling of the Hema Commission report that brought out the sexual assaults and other issues in the Malayalam film industry. Recently, the Kerala Women’s Commission filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court on Saturday, supporting the registration of FIRs over revelations made by victims in the Justice Hema committee report.
On the other hand, actor Nivin Pauly was cleared of all charges by the Kerala police in an alleged rape case filed against the ‘Varshangalkku Shesham’ actor. Nivin posted a note on Instagram, sharing gratitude to everyone who stood by him during tough times.
