Five Indian films that made the constitution feel alive

This Republic Day, let us not open law books. Let us open our hearts. Indian cinema has quietly told many stories about the Constitution. Not in loud words, but in human moments. These films show justice, equality, freedom, and dignity. They show how common people stand up to power. They remind us why India became a republic. Here are five films that feel like a salute to the Constitution.

2/6

'Jai Bhim'

Suriya starrer 'Jai Bhim' is a strong and painful story. It is based on real events. The film shows police violence against tribal people. It also shows how the system hurts the weak. Suriya plays a lawyer who uses the law as a shield. He fights for the right to life and freedom. The film shows that the Constitution gives power to the powerless. It tells us that justice is not just a word. It is a promise. Jai Bhim feels like a loud cry for equality.

3/6

'Article 15'

Article 15 talks directly about caste and discrimination. The film follows a police officer who wants to do the right thing. It shows how deep caste pain still exists. The film clearly says that the Constitution does not allow discrimination.

ETimes review for the film reads, "the performances by an ace set of actors is one of the high points of the film. Ayushmann Khurana has you hooked instantly, belting out a riveting performance as the sincere, determined police officer. It’s an intense, gripping act as he gets under the skin of his character. Other noteworthy scene stealers include actors Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub, in a short but impactful role as Nishad.

'Article 15' is not a light watch, but it is definitely relevant, compelling and a film that will spark conversation." This film feels like a hard but needed truth.

4/6

'Newton'

'Newton' is a quiet film with a big heart. It is about one man who believes in voting. He goes to a forest area full of fear and danger. Still, he wants people to vote. This film celebrates democracy. It shows that every vote matters.

ETimes review for the film reads, "'Newton' takes on a completely unremarkable subject. After all, why would anyone want to watch a film on election woes in a remote jungle surrounded by Naxalites? Surely not your average moviegoer who is primarily accustomed to the glitz and glamour of escapist Bollywood. But in the recent past, some films have tried to blur the line between sheer 'paisa vasool' quotient and essential social commentary. 'Newton' jumps over that divide and runs off with a brilliantly acted, impeccably written, lovingly shot, humorous, yet poignant film that Indian audiences didn't ask for, but need."

5/6

Swades

'Swades' is about coming back home. Shah Rukh Khan plays a man who returns to his village. He brings light, water, and hope. The film talks about equality and social duty. It shows that nation-building starts with small acts. 'Swades' feels warm and honest. It tells us that the Constitution dreams of a fair life for all. You can't simple forget the happiness in the old village woman when she sees the bulb in her house turning on and her dialogue - 'Bijli'.

6/6

'Jana Gana Mana'

Dijo Jose Antony and Prithviraj Sukumaran's 'Jana Gana Mana' is a must watch on this special day. The story revolves around the brutal murder of a college professor, sparking widespread public outrage, student protests, and demands for instant "justice" through extrajudicial means like fake encounters. A cop investigates the crime, while a brilliant lawyer (Prithviraj) defends the accused in court. Many of the dialogues in the movie are hard hitting and makes us question even our moral values.
