Renowned folk songwriter Arumughan Venkitangu passes away at 65
Arumughan Venkitangu, a prolific folk songwriter who played a pivotal role in elevating the late legendary actor Kalabhavan Mani to stardom, breathed his last on Tuesday, October 3. Arunmughan has composed approximately 350 timeless folk songs that have deeply resonated with Kerala’s traditional culture.
Affectionately referred to as "Nadanpattukalude Mudichoodamannan" (the uncrowned king of folk songs), Arumughan Venkitangu's lyrical genius brought to life classics like "Chalakudy Chanthaaku Pokumbol," "Pakalu Muzhuvan Pani Eduthu," "Varikka Chakkede Chola Kanakkinu," "Poovaadi Penne Poovaadi Penne," and "Varuthantoppam Olich Chaadiya," among others. These melodies, all rendered by the legendary Kalabhavan Mani, not only topped the charts but also etched themselves into the hearts of generations, especially during the era of cassette tapes.
Together, the dynamic duo of Arumughan and Kalabhavan Mani enhanced the popularity of folk songs among the people of Kerala. Arumughan's soulful lyrics and magnificent compositions, coupled with Kalabhavan Mani's electrifying performances, gave rise to a thriving folk music industry within Kerala's rich cultural landscape.
Arumughan's humble beginnings in a financially disadvantaged family did not affect his artistic pursuits. Despite his initial foray into journalism after completing his education, he had to give up his musical work due to financial constraints and turned to farming. However, his unwavering passion for music endured.
In addition to crafting enchanting folk songs for Kalabhavan Mani, Arumughan Venkitangu also ventured into composing and writing soundtracks for several Malayalam films, including Meenakshi Kalyanam, Udayon, The Guard, Chandrolsavam, and Rakshakan.
Arumughan is survived by his wife and children, and his final rites took place at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at the public cemetery in Mullassery, Thrissur. His musical legacy lives on, a testament to his enduring impact on Kerala's cultural heritage and the indomitable spirit of folk music.
